'Tristars are old and knackered', says tedious whiny nasal balladeer and writer of creepy lyrics. RAF transport have been owners of the wooden spoon for 4 decades; while it's not very satisfactory it isn't really news that the L-1011s and the Vicky10s are tired old nags held together by bailing twine, chewing gum and gaffer tape. Their impending replacement with the least cost-effective AAR deal in the history of the world will probably mean that in future RAF transport won't break down, they just won't be able to afford to fly anywhere, especially if someone might have the temerity to shoot at them.

Doesn't he do a lot of the "Flying out to entertain the troops" thing, with Katherine Jenkins.....so I guess he has some kind of personal interest in the matter. That said I am betting only the gay troopers would be upset if he could no longer get to the war.

Well he did single-handedly prevent World War 3.

Not that he likes to talk about it. Much.

I didn't like to prejudice readers by saying so in my OP, but I think he's a bit of a .

I'm really not sure why the negativity, he has a very valid point and at least he's got the balls to get out there and entertain the troops.

Good article.

We have lady soldiers now, and from what I've seen of him at an after show party he would certainly be popular with them. wink

To help out at the moment and in the past to have actually done it...

I have to say I quite like the chap. He presented the Buzzcocks a while ago and gave a good account of himself. They ripped the p**s out of him and he took it all in good humour and most of the p**s taking was along the lines of the what has been mentioned in this thread. He also instigated a lot of it himself - he knows what a lot of people think about him and laughs it off.

I'm not keen on his music, but fair play to him for doing stuff in support of the boys and girls in the forces.

he is quite well respected by the ARRSE boys given his previous life as a Tank Commander and they seem to be quite grateful for the little bit of publicity that these comments have generated.

Indeed - it's not like he went to South America and called for the falkland islands to be returned

He just pointed out the frustrations of the lads waiting three extra days in Helmand for a plane to show up.

I thought it was a good article with a nice self deprecating tone about it/

I don't like his songs but he speaks more sense than Morrisey.

Seems like a nice enough bloke.

agreed, although that still doesn't excuse his 'music'.

He has served his country in theatre, is self-deprecating, funny (I thought he came across very well on Top Gear when he was the SIARPC) and "does his bit" for the troops. Makes him a good bloke in my book. An ex-Blues & Royals mate who served with him says he was a solid soldier and a nice guy. Wifey likes his music too.

The points he makes in the article seem pretty valid to me but almost certainly aren't known to the man on the street and he knows his name will get the story out there.

What kind of sick evil bd would do such a thing. A free concert in aid of critically ill children - despicable.

:-) His music makes me want to tear my ears off my head and stamp them into the floor.... but whenever I've seen him interviewed he comes over very well indeed, that he highlights the work of our forces can only be a good thing IMO.

Do artists get paid for forces concerts? I assume not but in this upsidedown world.... if he's doing it FOC when it takes 3-4days when he could have played 3-4 paying gigs even more credit to him and other artists that do it.

On the other hand- why is he complaining, surely he just gets to spend longer looking at Katherine Jenkins, or is she a real whinge bag? :-)

I'm told there's a guy in Canada that bought up all the last serviceable civvy Tristars. He now names his price when the RAF want parts...
