There is a light aircraft that circles east london essex border at about 20 min intervals usually on sunday nights around midnight for about 2hrs
however it has apeared tonight/this morning mon/tue. Is this surveilance of some sort? Any ideas?

I appreciate it's night and dark, but could you identify if it's a single or twin engined aircraft?

It could be a police Britten Norman Islander. I know Hampshire police use one of these for surveillance work.

Circling sounds like it might be someone doing night circuits as part of their flying training.

Pilots have to do a certain amount of flying at night as part of their licence requirements. It's easiest just to keep doing take offs and landings flying a circuit from the same airfield for about two hours. You would usually launch off just after dark though and not wait until midnight to do that.

I heard this last night at around 1.15am to 1.30am. It took a route over the Crayford area of Kent and then headed north into Essex and came back again following the same route. Something twin engined.

Thanks for the replies, Not sure if single or twin engined, and lol nothing to hide. Is there a website for tracking planes like AIS for ships?

You can track planes, but I don't think light aircraft and certainly not surveillance aircraft as that might defeat the object a tiny bit wink

OP, I have a (conspiracy) theory about this. Do you live anywhere near a major flight path?

How about anti-aircraft trials whilst the major airports are closed for the night?

Everything unusual that goes on these days seems to be related to the Olympics!

Nope - you'd only hear it once, then the Rapier would take it down.

Not really, I don't like conspiracies on the whole and I'm a little bit ashamed of myself.

But..

We have an Islander that sits circling for hours on end day and night, we are close to the approach to Manchester Airport and I wonder if it is to do with making sure there are no bad people about.

The registration (G-SJCH) expired in Feb 2011 so that must be when they dropped the service. All part of the cost cutting I suppose.

It's not a conspiracy, it's real and is circling around stopping bad people from doing bad things. It's no secret.

Well it's either registered or it isn't.

But hey, if you're not doing anything wrong there's nothing to fear...

But here's what I find mysterious, the aircraft will be aloft for hours on end sometimes coming back to the same area night after night or day after day. I'm aware the local police forces (GMP and Cheshire) use these things but not normally for so long. Whenever they use helicopters they seem to be up for a short time (chasing burglars, car thieves etc.)

I doubt it is looking for heat signatures because it is often over a relatively rural area for extended periods, surely finding a cannabis farm would be a reasonably quick exercise.

Dont they use aircraft to check airport radar and automatic landing systems are correctly calibrated?

Anything to do with this?
