What's RIAT like to go to? I'm tempted to go, but have the small issue of a 7 month old son! He's mum doesn't want to miss out either, so he will have come along. How loud will it be and how busy will the show be? He's well behaved and will sleep through most things, but I'm still unsure how easy it will be with him, especially if it's raining!

It's that or we all go swimming smile
To be helpfully blunt - go swimming. I wouldn't take my kids there until they were at least six or seven. Although, that said, I think my youngest was about four when we first went. It is very loud at times, and can be very tiring.

Helpfully blunt it what I was looking for! Unless of course I can manage to convince the Mrs that she doesn't want to come...

This will be my first 'proper' airshow as an adult, I haven't been since I went as a kid and I can't wait!

I do have the disadvantage of a broken ankle though, so some thick gloves (for the crutches!) and a big pack of paracetamol will be packed!

I'm sure the first aiders will be delighted to deal with you. There is a LOT of walking to do at RIAT to get in and near the runway.

One final thing - it is very very wet & muddy so make sure you take a change of clothes & footwear as you won't want to drive home in wet & muddy shoes & trousers.
Thanks for the heads up. Will be taking the boy who is 6 and will be taking plenty of changes of clothing I think.

Just what is it about the Vulcan that makes grown men go weak at the knees when 558 is mentioned? Bizarre.
I think it's the mechanical equivalent of a famous person.
You know how some people feel the need to crowd round someone famous just to catch a glimpse, well I don't - but the thought of seeing and hearing 558 makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's so rare and beautiful. The only thing that could come close would be Concorde, but we'll never see that in the air again.
Just IMHO.

I was there for yesterdays arrivals. Had an awesome time and got loads of photos. Posted them all in a blog post here:

If you get the chance to go, even just for arrivals or departures, do, you won't regret it!

Some cool pics there, I hope the weather holds out for Saturday as I even decided to hire an 80-400mm lens this year. Just pissed off I can't get tomorrow off work to go and try to see the B2 arrive.

To the people that are nutty about the Vulcan, the only planes that I wanted to see as much are things like the B2 and SR-71, I'm just annoyed they couldn't keep a blackbird going for airshows (same for Concord actually).

I assume the farmer will be opening his field again this year? - The field right in front of the runway (with the large lake) near Totterdown?
If so, any ideas how much he's charging per person this year - still £15 each??

What is the Eastern Park and View area you write about in that blog?

ETA, don't worry, found it on their website!

Just got back from RIAT. Working there however I have seen some spectacular flying today during training so the actual displays should be awesome.

Not sure how much flying I will get to see over the next few days however so long as I get to see XH558 in the air I don't really care to much about anything else.

Didn't see the B2 as not sure whether or not it is already on the ground or when she is due in.

Hopefully the weather will be as good as it has been today so here's hoping for a dry few days.

Nice photos Slinky! Departures are always good as they tend to do a little vertical or roll out action, it's pretty cool! If the Ukranian Flanker is there as it was last year, it just shot up and messed about, it was cool to watch!

Cheer smile I would love to go see that but unfortunately I'm working on Monday frown Still, I'm planning on going down Saturday and having a watch from the local farmers field at least!

Also, for those who can't be bothered to click through loads of photos, here are some of them posted here for your convenience :P

Nice! I have seen photos on another forum of the Osprey that arrived, and it is a very moody looking aircraft with the low vis markings and heavy stain marks on from engines.

What size lens is best for the view and park locations? What did you you use? (are those uncropped?) I might go tomorrow, weather dependent, but if you say the aircraft leave on Monday then I might wait until then.

OTotterdown Farm, Google for their website. Will be there at 7am tomorrow. Now £10 person iirc

That's the campsite on the hill - I meant the field that in in front of the perimeter fence, by the airfield emergency gate on the right?

That's Rhymes Farm. Probably still 15 quid a head. Very muddy from several accounts.

It's a pity the Russians stopped doing airshow's though. The MiG-29OVT at Farnborough '06 has burned itself into my memory as the most awe-inspiring piece of flying i've ever seen.
Same at RIAT that year.

I have a ticket for Sunday but I'm not going now. Its too late to post but if anyone is passing through Southampton or is local to me that fancies going I'm after £29 for it. Thats the price I paid right at the start of the year and would just like to recoup cost.
