When she needs to be loaded up with bombs missiles etc, will she go to Glenmallon like the Invincibles did?

I imagine the jetty will be too short.

Looks like the AA systems aren't operational yet then...
Yes - one would HOPE the radar picked it up...

So what plans do they have for aerial refueling? What's the range on the F-35B, 450nm ?

Can't see them tanking off a Merlin!

You are assuming the MOD actually plans things like normal sane people. F-35b can't buddy refuel last I read. So unless there's a Voyager around their missions will be short. Or the MOD spends even more money on something else.

Voyager can't refuel F35, it's hose 'n' drogue and has no boom capability. Additionally F35 has no probe.

Quite......thereby negating the whole bloody point of spending all those billions for what for us (UK plc) will just be a Harrier replacement. (not to mention now consuming so much resource that it will have to be a not-so-good Tornado replacement as well!!)

We should have either bit the bullet and did carriers properly again......or forgot the whole idea......... or taken back the Harrier design from the septics and got BAe to build some new ones to operate off Lusty or a replacement for her and Ark/Invincible (and sold then to Spain, India and Italy as well smile)

As usual UK plc still trying to convince the world that we are still worth our place at the top table (and just making the usual half arsed attempt at it)

From the article

Maj Gen Konashenkov said Mr Fallon's "exalted statements" about HMS Queen Elizabeth "demonstrate a clear lack of knowledge of naval science".
"Unlike the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, fitted with air-defence, anti-submarine and, most importantly, Granit anti-ship missile systems, the British aircraft carrier is just a convenient, large maritime target," he said.

"Russians will admire it" QE Armament:
At least 3 × Phalanx CIWS[12]
30-mm DS30M Mk2 guns
Miniguns

"old, dilapidated" Admiral Kuznetsov Armament:
6 × AK-630 AA guns (6×30 mm, 6,000 round/min/mount, 24,000 rounds)
8 × CADS-N-1 Kashtan CIWS (each 2 × 30 mm Gatling AA plus 32 3K87 Kortik SAM)
12 × P-700 Granit SSM
24 × 8-cell 3K95 Kinzhal SAM VLS (192 missiles; 1 missile per 3 seconds)
RBU-12000 UDAV-1 ASW rocket launchers (60 rockets)

The Admiral Kranky will be out of action for about 3 years soon as it gets a much needed refit to sort out it's reliability problems which come from age and also replacement of missile systems.

http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/upgrading-the-...

So even when all that work is done the QE will still be around 6 years away from being fully operational based on the 2026 estimate.

Just doing it's bit for the environment.

Ps. Also apparently it's an Aircraft Cruiser, not carrier. They can't go through the Dardanelles if it's a carrier, due to the Montreux Convention.

RAF Voyagers were in the US last year refuelling F35Bs. The F35A is a different case, but not relevant to this discussion.

The reason Russian ships have so much armament is so that when the st hits the fan, at least one system will actually work.

Well it is a bit......

As previously mentioned, with no Tonka replacement on the horizon, we've put all our eggs in the F-35B basket, and there is now debate as to whether we should chop some of the order for B's and split into a mix of -A and -B, with the -A being a closer Tonka replacement than the -B.....however, that then creates a problem of Voyager can't refuel the -A as stated.....

Which then threw up the absurd possibility that the RAF may have to buy the naval -C to operate from land-bases only.......

Whereas, had we stuck with the original change to the -C model and fitted cats n traps to the carriers, we could have ordered a full buy of -C models which would have given massive one-fleet only cost savings, probably offsetting the extra cost over service life, of fitting the bloody cats n traps in the first place..... (pretty much as we did when we bought the F-4 back in the late 60's)

UK short-termism at its finest yet again.........

Thanks for that. smile

I wasn't aware that the B had been fitted with a probe.
