Yep, but I'm still waiting for the Beeb to show this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0074qz5
It was due to be shown the weekend one of the Red Arrows crashed with the pilot killed. Was wondering if they pulled it because of that, but it hasn't been rescheduled.

'series which celebrates an unlikely story of outstanding British aviation achievement '

Unlikely? Makes it sound like an accident.

". . . at a time of national austerity" It was "unlikely" because there wasn't much spending going on. hehe

Austerity? They should try 2012! By contrast we must have been loaded in the 50s, and no bloody Europe on our backs.

It is because the cold half of Europe was on our backs that we had to do it!

BBC4 do some excellent programmes, thanks for the heads-up smile

The UK was pretty much bankrupt in the early 1950s. The government therefore issued a dictat to industry telling them to "export or die" and the investment in aviation was part of that policy. In most cases, the investment was squandered on aircraft that not only weren't exported, but weren't even put into service in the UK. There were some notable exceptions, of course.
And some very interesting test and development aircraft emerged from this process.
