Potentially controversial - Is the Vulcan REALLY that noisy?
Discussion
I remember being deafened by the Vulcan many moons ago at air shows when we had a few of them, I imagine she isnt as loud now due to deference being shown to the old girl, and who can blame her.
From airshows in my youth I recall the Blackbird being the loudest thing ever, although Concorde was damn loud even when watching from the car park roof at Heathrow. And a Harrier doing a vertical takeoff 50 feet away from me when on ATC camp was quite memorable too
Im just glad a Vulcan is still flying, and would love to see her again. But any jet noise is nice for me

So going by the responses of this thread, it looks like I'm yet to experience the Vulcan on full chat
Just means I'm going to have to make sure I'm there for the last ever flight!
Possibly the best take off noise/howl recorded I have heard, after the B52 eventually gets off the ground - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYOgsgnZ8dwJust means I'm going to have to make sure I'm there for the last ever flight!
I love the XH558. I was oblivious to the Vulcan until it appeared at the Revival a few years back. There are often displays of aircraft as well as the cars racing, normally a couple of spitfires/hurricanes and a Lancaster. All lovely etc etc. But the time the Vulcan was there was spine tingling.
The whole of the crowd at the revival fell utterly silent and watched as she flew over. I have never experienced this complete contrast from loud racing and several thousand noisy people to this silence apart from the awesome sight and sound of the Vulcan.
I started to donate from then because we just cannot lose her.
And she is at Duxford on Saturday and I am already committed. Aaarrgghhh.

I think its safe to say "Jets are loud"
If you're close enough when the pilot puts it to the stops I doubt you can make a judgement call as Human ears aren't designed the understand sound pressure at those levels.
More importantly (as was said earlier) I doubt the Vulcan is being hammered much, in fact they are probably probably using as little gas a possible to save the engines and airframe.
A few years ago I was at Duxford for a show- all day Military jets, helicopters and WWII fighters and Bombers right overhead, all loud but nothing outstanding.
Late in the afternoon 2 USAF jets out of Lakenheath did a single flypast then returned over the airfield and went straight up on afterburners... when the noise dissipated almost ever car alarm was going and half the crowd where cringing with fingers in ears in stunned silence.
I think the difference was they really did give it the beans and pointed the loud end straight at the crowd, something thats clearly not the normal display show behaviour.
Can't be many more evocative sounds than a jet really tearing the sky up, its almost indescribable- like God gargling with thunder :-)

I saw the Vulcan do its stand up and scoot trick many years ago, at Cosford I believe. Fly in low and slow, then turn on its tail and rocket vertically out of sight. A massive and brutal display of power and noise, literally set the ground trembling.
If cars had had alarms back then they would have fallen off, not gone off.
I remember seeing the same thing at Biggin Hill - probably early 1970's? It was just an incredible thing to see and hear! :0 If cars had had alarms back then they would have fallen off, not gone off.

Wow! Apart from the clicking and ticking of fingers on camera, that was amazing! 2. Warn neighbours

I know I will get flamed for this, but I'm not very interested in the Vulcan, it was impressive to see and hear it take off once at Farnborough but it seems to be over hyped now. I know why as it takes so much money to keep it in the air.
However I would far prefer to see other types put in the air, the trouble is that I doubt that many of those types would garner the same level of support from the public.

I'd happily donate to a Victor or Lightning to the sky! However I would far prefer to see other types put in the air, the trouble is that I doubt that many of those types would garner the same level of support from the public.
