These SR-71 Blackbirds
Discussion
Had a sit in a cockpit of an SR-71 in the Museum of Flight, in Seattle next to the airport, so cramped in there, and thats withoug a flying suit on.
Wasnt there a story about it being the SR-something, and when the president announced it he cocket it up, rather than tell him, they re did all the blue prints to show SR-71.
Love the starter pack, a trolly with TWO V8 engines, no mufflers.
Think I read that in "Skunk Works", book, a good read.

Yes, it was originally designated the RS-71, but Lyndon Johnson announced it incorrectly, getting his R's and S's mixed up!Boatbuoy said:

I've heard that story many times but I'm not exactly sure is true. If someone can produce a recording or transcript of the announcement it would be very useful to verify it for once and for all. What IS true is that he announced the existence of the "A-11" research aircraft. The A-11 was one of the earlier design studies that eventually led to the first production version of this design, the Lockheed A-12. No A-11s were ever built.
Here's newsreel footage of the press conference from 1964. It's not clear whether he made a mistake or whether it was a deliberate ploy to provide further misinformation about the true nature of the A-12/SR-71 programme.
