Id like to have a bash at this,

Very lucrative career with pay packets nearing 6 digits! Hard to get in though...

Depends which TOC / FOC you work for and where you put the decimal point...! Biggest regret - leaving the railway aged 19... happily I managed to rejoin thirteen years ago and am now back on the footplate as a Driver, still enjoying it despite the some of the attitudes on the managerial side.

Well done to the OP and anyone else who gets in by the way ;o)

Just been advised I have been selected to attend a Train Driver assessment centre for First Great Western have not yet been given a date would appreciate any guidance on what books or training material would help me to prepare for the day and fingers crossed pass.

Join this website for a month or two. Make sure you become bloody good at those tests. Aim for 90% on all of them and within the time set.

Also when you're at work etc, start thinking a bit more for yourself. If someone tries to do a hard sum, try and do it in your head. It all helps.

There was a bloke who wrote a program for the Group Bourdon (dots) test. Unfortunately it seems he's taken it down frown

I've only seen the adverts on the website but after passing the basic year the salary jumps to 50-60k depending on which route you are driving. That plus a massive pension packet is just too appealing. I'm keeping an eye open as well but due to age, family, location etc I don't think I'll have as much chances as others...

Passed the second interview today. Weirdly I found it the hardest part of the process so far.

Medical on Tuesday and then a contract will be sent out as soon as there's confirmation I've passed it! clap

Well done.

Now it's touch your toes and cough time....

Medical will include drugs and alcohol tests so no boozing the night before and take any medication with you (inc paracetamol). Pretty straight forward - blood pressure, weight, vision(inc colour),flexibility and hearing, just don't tell them about the false leg and recurring Tourettes!

Trust me, now the hard work begins....

Luckily I researched the application process thoroughly, so I've been of the coke for a few weeks now. Don't have a fking clue about the Tourettes though!

Jan 9th should be when the hard work starts. I'm very very eager to start, but also crapping it biggrin

I've been meaning to say, contract is all signed up now. The only thing to do now is arrive on the 7th of Jan, and join the union.

It's a nice Christmas present to myself smile

Well done! But just wait until the rabid Tories on PH see your mention of The Union!

Less than that, 40k is average after you pass out your salary will go up, then it will take another year before you earn full pay as you have to do one years probation after you pass all your training

Overtime is where you'll see the extra and there is plenty of it if your willing.

Not a driver but a controller grade, usual take home is about 2.8, this period I did 4.6!

Nice pop before Christmas
