Decommissioning Ceremony on the 28th of August, applied for an invite.
The 1982 crew have been awarded the South Atlantic medal, 32 years on.
Apparently there had been a campaign for the "forgotten task force" to be recognised for there efforts.
I presume the ship will now get the Battle honour as well.
Not sure how this will go down with the SAMA?
What do you think about this?

Inappropriate to award a battle honor to Illustrious. The cease fire had been declared so the conflict was over by the time she got down there to relieve Invincible. Not even sure about the crew getting a campaign medal as the campaign was over when she pitched up.The 1982 crew have been awarded the South Atlantic medal, 32 years on.

I was on Lusty 1982 during Falklands. Artificer Apprentice. Would love to be at the Decom of her. How do you apply for an invite??

Never got a reply, so missed out .
Probably full of toffs, vips and grunters anyway
Pity Jock Slater never made it, he threw the thing around like a Type 21!!
Would like to get on board before she is mothballed.
All the South Atlantic crew should get there SAM on board imo, remembrance week?
The MoD will have to subsidise any future project to make it viable, if it is to become a museum maybe they could found the conversion needed?

Why? The cease fire was on the 14th June and Illustrious didn't take over from Invincible until the 28th August. The South Atlantic Campaign medal was awarded in recognition of taking part in the 'Falklands Conflict' with rosette for those who operated inside the exclusion zone.Speculatore said:

Why? Well, rightly or wrongly the criteria has recently been changed, the ships company and the rest of the forgotten task force, including HM ships, Battleaxe,Birmingham,Liverpool,Southampton,Amazon, Diomede and others, have now been awarded the medal, without Rosette.Do i personally agree? yes and no is the answer, your dates are, of course correct.
However Illustrious sailed from Newcastle, around the 8th of June IIRC? for more stores at Portsmouth, then work up and commission on route to the South Atlantic, as far as crew were concerned they where going to war, ok the cease fire was declared,on the islands, when did Argentina cease hostilities?
The ships were in defence watches, and went action stations on numerous occasions as Aircraft frequently took off from the mainland to "test our defences" right up till October. Do these guys deserve a medal? possibly not, do the personal serving in May 82 at Northwood and Accension deserve one then?
I lost a couple of ex Hermes mess mates on Ardent, and still remember the joy
one of them had to get drafted to a 21!! now these lads really deserve theres.
Today you get a medal for Queens birthdays,or being on the thrown, what next? Williams wedding anniversary?
As i understand it the crew of 82 have to apply to the MoD for the award, so if they feel, unworthy, they won`t bother.
For those who want the recognition, my original opinion stands, let them receive it on board.
It would be nice to see Lusty kept in Portsmouth, I don't know if its possible due to her size but would be great to see it permanently moored alongside Warrior in that area between Warrior and Portsmouth Harbour railway station, that area is an eye sore, especially when the tide is out.

Not much they can do about the mud, but it's a reasonably busy area for small fishing craft launching from the tiny, cobbled slip there. The whole Hard area has just been approved for a complete revamp of all its transport links, so maybe plopping a dirty great big grey whale might not be considered a way of improving the aesthetics.

Sad news coming out today, via the Illustrious association that the ship will be scrapped. Apparently a deal with Turks is just about complete.
We await official conformation, sad, but not unexpected news.
Edit to add, they are now saying no such decision has yet been made, time will tell?
