32 years is a relatively long innings for a ship. Let's hope they find some way of preserving her.

"While its sister ships were sold for scrap, the government has indicated that Illustrious could be turned into a floating museum as a tribute to the decommissioned class of warship."

There's hope yet.......

Yes - the "Sold for Scrap" was a BBC atempt at a "Daily Mail wind up" style heading.

The fate of Lusty has not yet been decided.

I was lucky enough for a private tour when my Bro was PWO on her. She was parked bow to bow with Ark as she was being decommisioned. Worth a look I'd say.

My first RN ship. I'm listed in the Commissioning book but sadly don't have a copy. Good memories of my time as an apprentice WAFU in her - 814 Squadron 1984.

I was the Executive warrant Officer on her from 2004 - 2007. I also served on Invincible from 1980 - 1986 and to complete the carrier trio I was on the previous 'Ark Royal' (Not the recent 'Invincible Class') from 1976 - 1979.

My first proper ship draft too when I was on 800 Sqn. I hope she does get preserved, but this countries history with preserving important bits of history, particularly warships isn't great.

Left Hermes and joined Illustrious in 82 then transfered to Bombers 83. Helped de store the old Ark in Guz in78. I have got a great photo of H and Illustrious from 82 Hermes coming back from the Falklands and Illustrious going down. We should share some other CVH photos.

All seems a bit rushed I would keep her floating until Lizy is at least undergoing sea trials. Mind she could be due a major overhaul soon and Ocean is just out of refit.

I've got a photo of all 3 invincible class sailing together. I was on Ark at the time.

It isn't really. Illustrious is a helicopter ship not an aircraft carrier, so what's the point in keeping her in service?

Did your office in Lusty have a shiny door by chance? If so I think I may have share a cup of tea with you in there. I was SIMPRESS in her in 2095 when she was doing her ORI

Had to laugh at this bit.

Illustrious would be delivered 3 months ahead of schedule: “It was unknown for any ship to go out fault free.” says John: “But there was nothing wrong with it. We thought that cannot be….but it was.” Illustrious was on target to be delivered to the navy with no defects, nothing to be fixed or replaced. An outstanding achievement.

This was a common occurrence
Hydraulic failure on the after lift.rolleyes
