wrong variantthe A model is a land based Conventional take off and landing aircraft
the B model is the VTOL/ STOVL model
the C model is the CATOBAR navailised version
The first flight was the wrong model but

The facility will assemble both Italy’s F-35A conventional takeoff and landing variant and the F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing variant,

F-35B USMC IOC debrief.
http://www.pogoarchives.org/straus/2015-9-1-DoD-FO...
It ain't pretty, points to the USMC improvising an IOC political showcase.
Highlights are the staged Engineering Evaluations [ie lay the kit on the deck and look at it] and the running engine hand pushbacks totally out-with any F-35 ground handling regs.
I'm just glad they got away with that one, this time...

Interesting read. I'm amazed the F-35 has a bigger weapons payload. Surely though the A-10 has to be an easier plane to keep flying than something as complex as the F-35. I would also imaging the TLCs of the A-10 are far lower than the F-35 which is big concern these days.

Supply chain is a very big issue. An A10 may be simpler, but if the spare part you need is in another country then you are straight out of luck. The far greater number of F35s should make having the right parts in the right place at the right time much easier. CBA'd wading through the thread to find if this has already been posted, but did you all see the interview with the F35 pilot who said "the F35 will be just as good as the F16 at close air support"
He then goes on to say that the F35 will be better at everything else at any other mission on the planet...except CAS....oh and in the air engagements too
It blows my mind that with the amount of R&D and money that has went into this plane A) It's still not right and B) It's still not better than stuff like the F16.
Which isn't to take anything way from the F16 - it's a bloody awesome plane, but still...

Remember the F-16 was originally designed as an air-combat fighter, whereas the F-35 is primarily a strike aircraft Which isn't to take anything way from the F16 - it's a bloody awesome plane, but still...

So it's cannon fires 3300 rounds per min, and it can carry 180 rounds? Is that 180 in total? Defcon5 said:
