Delivered for what purpose?

Testing?
Familiarisation?
Full operational service?
Technical instruction?
A bit of PR?

Most brand new aircraft have to go through quite extensive acceptance trials before they are ready for operational use. I'm not sure where the A400M is regarding these trials as far as RAF service is concerned.
It was delivered in time for a David Cameron visit.. and it was generally known that after the visit, it would spend some time getting snagged. Not so much a reliability issue; rather, a premature delivery.

I visited the 400 sim recently (if I can fly it..) and the feedback from recent operators was very positive. More tellingly, the input from the -J fleet was positive as well. The contracted costs though, are insane.

Future of the -J fleet.. SF+ and strictly restricted tac role?

They're assembled by EADS Spain in Seville. Looks like this was a test or delivery flight for the Turkish airforce.

Updated statement from Airbus:

Airbus Defence and Space confirms that an A400M aircraft has been involved in an accident near Sevilla (Spain) Airport on May 09, 2015 around 13:00 local time.

The aircraft with the serial number MSN023, was making the first production flight and had departed from Sevilla Airport at 12:45 pm local time.

Airbus is devastated to confirm that of a total crew of 6 on board we have lost 4 of our crew members in the accident. 2 other crew members are currently in hospital in a serious condition. All crew members are Airbus Defence and Space employees of Spanish nationality. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic accident and we are providing all our care and support.

An Airbus Group go-team of technical advisors is being dispatched to provide full assistance to the official committee in charge of the investigation.

MSN023 was foreseen to be the third aircraft to be delivered to the Turkish customer. The formal delivery was scheduled for June 2015.

The fact that two crew have survived would imply there was an element of control when it crashed. Hoping they recover OK.

On the news last night they described a controlled emergency landing underway when the plane hit an electricity pylon causing extensive damage and fire

The fuel load has certainly reduced the composite structure to ashes; I hope the attending firefighters were fully togged up with BA.

Looking at Streetview, in the area where the FR24 tracking stops there is a High-Voltage line

So close to the Runway, they had almost made it frown
