Hello all,
Could somebody give me advice please: I am a 48 year's old UK citizen, with a Master's Degree in Transportation. I would like to join the Merchant Navy at a mature age. Over the last 25 years, I have worked in airline/airport operations or management and also teaching. I have also worked overseas, in developing countries (Africa, the Pacific) on infrastructure project management. I have sailed extensively and renovated sailing boats as a hobby.
I guess it is a late "wake-up" call but I would still like to make it happen. My medical is OK. What advice can you give me in terms of cadetship, sponsors, schools (I would be ready to cover part or all of my training costs)?
Thank you
My old seagoing employer had a retirement age of 55, does not give you much of a career. To be honest, being someone in the industry, I would not be interested in taking on a 48 year old as a Cadet.

My company employs a wide array of coffin dodgers; 48 would be lowering the average age of the crew on most of the ships. To be honest, being someone in the industry, I would not be interested in taking on a 48 year old as a Cadet.

Don't the kids these days use those fangled computer thingies?
I think it depends on whether the owners are willing to shell out on two separate ECDIS boxes as the rules require two different means of navigation, so skinflint owners don't bother and just keep the people who look out of the windows for a living busy with paper charts.hidetheelephants said:

As an engineer, I strongly believe in charts, mainly as a free source of jointing.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
