The A380 will have been flying for a decade this April.
And still seems so new!
Well it's 'only' just over seven years since it first flew commercially. 10 years ago was the first test flight.
That'll be why then..........only 7 years old wink

Customer told me her A380 didn't depart Manchester for Dubai on Christmas eve after it landed with an engine fire.

I saw it on approach, looked ok. Anybody hear anything about this?

"without cheap Middle Eastern fuel!"

This I totally disagree on otherwise we would be tinkering fuel out of the Middle East on a daily basis but instead on some destinations we tanker into the Middle East.
I genuinely don't know enough to argue the point, but the cost effectiveness of tinkering seems to be a black art. I was under the impression some of the middle eastern outfits paid less for fuel than UK operators ( and consequently have a different cost/seat balance).

Ha didn't even notice that! Stupid iPhone or stupid user!

No pay the same price as everyone else. The savings come from the manpower side with all the tertiary roles where they pay what is peanuts to westerners, but enough for those in the sub continent to put their kids through school. I'm not saying it's right but that's what happens.

Emirates said this "Emirates A380 A6-EEC operating EK17 Dubai – Manchester was on approach to Manchester when crew received abnormal indications from the #4 engine. The aircraft continued for a safe landing, however the return EK18 was cancelled."

Bet Branson's kicking himself for hissy-fit cancellation of his A380 order when delivery fell behind schedule.

I was on the M60 when it was on approach, looked massive!

...no flames coming out of it though.

Aye, it's a bit of a weird one, is this. At Manchester, it always looks huge but at Heathrow it looks tiny.

Didn't realise he's called it a day with the 380 - what's he having instead the 747-8? or 787?

Edited to add I've just googled it and found the answer (to date)

I suspect they'll have some within a few years yes

No, not now. His order was one of the first and he cancelled it when delivery was delayed.

I believe he still has a380's in order, but keeps pushing them back, last I heard was 2018. Will the line even be running in 2018?

Why the hell should he do that? A bod from Rolls Royce tells me that the A380's fuel economy is saving operators huge sums of money.

Not saying it's the right decision, and I really do hope they get them, but this interview with Branson, coupled with fact that they will never take delivery whilst Delta are involved, and the fact that by current delivery schedules, they will have waited 18 years for them, Vs are clearly not jumping through hoops to get their hands on them!

agree on the labour costs but i would also have thought/hoped that emirates and etihad paid less for fuel than other airlines given they are owned by people with vast oil reserves. in a country where i can fill my car with super unleaded for £10 a tank why would they charge themselves a premium for ATF?

Only compared to an old 747. Decreasing A380 orders show that not many airlines (except Emirates) want a huge 4 engined aircraft when big twins are often more suitable to their route networks. Even Emirates are pushing for a NEO A380, which again leads to a fall in orders with operators not wanting the present model.

Branson's businesses live on publicity. He always gets in early on new aircraft orders because it gets headlines. The fact that they wouldn't really suit Virgin Atlantic to operate is the reason he doesn't have any yet. It's headlines and public image he is after.
