I think the red bits of the roundels were removed to avoid any confusion with the Japanese markings.

The white markings are also Allied Recognition markings - the Japanese had yellow leading edges similar to those used by the RAF in N Europe.

2007 I suspect, when Ed Shipley ferried TFC's P-51D 'Miss Velma' from Chino, California, across the USA and then across the Atlantic to Duxford.Just done pretty much the same, but in an A350. That was tiring enough even as a passenger.
