They're a lot more similar than you'd think. Not only did Avro evolve the design, they used the same drawings, only redrawing or modifying Lancaster drawings to make revisions as needed - as a result lots of Shackleton fits Lancaster. From main spar booms, to mainwheels... there's quite a list.

What's in a name?

Obviously, Avro themselves thought that both the Lincoln and the Shackleton had evolved enough away from the Lancaster to warrant new names.

In fact, perhaps we should say that they are really all Manchester sub-variants.

It seems the name changes were applied whenever the design had evolved enough to warrant a new Type Number being assigned.

You're right about Manchester of course, and I've come across several of the drawings for Shackleton that originally started life as "Manchester - 33ft tailplane".

They have a bunch of planes you can fly in . I also took a run in a B-25 Mitchell. They have a DC-3, some trainers and other stuff you can fly in.

I reckon Avros were quite keen to discontinue the "Manchester" description.

I was quite surprised to find a Shackleton in Tucson a few years ago....and it had to have been flown in.

True, but they do not deteriorate much. The soil is such that even rain drains away in minutes so they are fine. The real damage is from sand or dust storms, to the active USAF planes have plastic on all glass or plexiglass surfaces.

I think it's looking a bit better now though.

Distance shouldn't be a problem. They flew all the way to the Ruhr and back without landing!

Indeed it was flown in.

Mr.McHenry made it's final flight into Pima Air Mueseum back in 2007.

Here it is on that final flight.

Flypast magazine has a nice article. In it they state shes flown further, flights to the west coast of Canada with no issues. Fingers crossed the trip will be drama free. Moments in history like this are what 'Goosebumps' evolved for!
Very much looking forward to seeing, and hearing them together. And if they can visit Just Jane, and run up all 12 Merlins...WOW!!
