I thought both Lancasters appeared at Bournemouth, not just the BBMF?
Nope Vera went technical before they got that far.

Regarding VERA & the replacement engine - i assume that the new engine has come out of the spares held by the BBMF.
I thought it came from the airworthy supply they have been putting together at East Kirkby to get Just Jane into the air.
Nope, that appears to have been false info. East Kirby did offer one, but. the one being fitted is a BBMF one. CWH are being charged on a 'power by hour' basis according to BBMF ...... whatever that means? but I'm guessing it's something like (cost of overhaul/tbo * hours flown in Vera) using a simplistic formula.
CWH are hoping to get their engine repaired here in time for re-fitting for the flight back to Canada.

Not a straight swap either, Retro Air & Track (who are contracted by MoD to do BBMF engine overhauls) have been involved to do some approved changes to the engine to work in Vera.
The Original plan was to use one of LAHC new zero time engine, but they looked further and realised it would be twice as much work as fit a BBMF donk.

BBMF also admitted on the radio they are not charging CWHM for the loan of the engine, and it looks as if she will be flying back with our engine before getting it crated and shipped back.

Also, more updates...

Where do all these 'good as new' Merlin engines come from? Is there a remaining supply of irreplaceable components steadily being depleted? Or can existing engines be rebuilt indefinitely with new parts? Or can an effectively new Merlin be built from scratch?

LOads of Merlin bits around, lots being remanufactured, some parts shared with the Meteor. Don't forget they race & tune them in the US for pylon racing.

So are we ever going to run out, or can every component be legally remanufactured? Could someone build a Merlin clone without infringing copyright?

Taken from RR: By the end of production in 1951, a total of 168,040 Merlin engines were produced including over 55,000 built under licence as the V-1650 by Packard in the USA.

So a lot about still as someone said mainly used for air racing these days in the states. But a lot of spits and hurricanes using them on the airshow circuit around the world.

It's not cheap to do an engine rebuild but a lot of parts still around and remanufactured.

As far as I know Packard still build brand new Merlins because of the demand from pylon racers etc.

Not true. Packard Merlin production ended in 1945.

Yes.

Still a lot of bits about, but the supply of flight capable crankcases etc., is being diminished over time. The US hydroplane racers and Reno racers have trashed a hell of a lot over the years during the 60/70/80's when engines were in plentyful supply.

The situation with airworthy DB601/605's is very different, with bits in very short supply.

If you could get close to both what pictures would you like to see? All being well I should be able to get a very close view of both tomorrow.

That must be why the two didn't show to show at the Ayr air show( try saying THAT when pissedsmile) Shame, maybe they were worried if they came to Scotland that Salmond would impound the lot and use them to found independent Scotland's new air force, on the grounds that as a wingnut was made in Paisley that makes them Scottishsmile
At least XH558 got there
