A guy who has personally restored to airworthy condition a 1950s Hawker Hunter jet fighter. He flies it as his personal aircraft and he told me the difficulty he had in getting the Royal Navy colour scheme just right. I gave him a few contacts in the modelling fraternity who might be able to help him regarding colour schemes. He was really grateful
The lads from Classic Jets who are based at Newquay and Coventry and were displaying a Canberra, a Vampire, a Gloster Meteor and also had in the static park a Jet Provost and a Gnat.
Paint jobs are extremely hard for classic aircraft as everyone thinks they know best. I certainly remember a spitfire being painted in the correct paint and all the spotters forums suddenly complaining it was the wrong shade, who's right though if all you've got is someone who saw it years ago or books and old photos potentially? The canberra is operated my midair squadron who are based at Kemble.
The gnat on display was from the gnat display team that are based at north Weald.

I think my memory is wanting it to be a red arrow at the time. Memory is not always a good recorder. What else would be red around 77? I know it was a gnat and it was having fun.
I thought you were talking about the weekend just passed and it was a privately owned Gnat.Back in 1977 the Reds were still flying the Gnats (they changed to Hawks for the 1980 season).

Sometimes the records regarding "old" colours are quite good - sometimes they are skimpy and unclear. The closer you get to the present day the better it gets - although if you look at Charles E Browns excellent colour photos taken in the 1940s you are getting a pretty good rendition of British colours in use at that time. The canberra is operated my midair squadron who are based at Kemble.

His photos of the Spitfire RF-D are well known and a real benchmark for that ocean grey/dark green./medium grey scheme. He also took a great sequence of colour shots of a Westland Whirlwind.
This chap restored the Hunter to its 1962 Royal Navy scheme and it looks like he has done an excellent job. It looked just right.

The Farnborough example was in Yellowjacks livery.
What did I see this afternoon, about 1340hrs? Something massive with a high mounted tailplane, heading broadly east, it appeared to be in the circuit to land on runway 24. IL-76? Is it here to collect stuff that was on exhibit?

We stayed until the end of the show. - I was a little sad that so many people left before the Spitfire had finished displaying.
I was on the balcony at the media centre and couldn't believe the numbers leaving DURING the Red Arrows so they also missed the Typhoon and Spitfire. If I was the organisers a strongly worded letter to the Met Office may be in order.
They must have miised out on 1000's more through the gate because of the forecast.
How could it have been so wrong especially for the afternoon.
We were sitting outside until 10:30 that evening at my B in L's which is only 10 mins walk from the footbridge entrance.

It is SO SMALL !!! I can imagine that being strapped into a Gnat must be a pilots dream. The plane is so tiny it must feel like an extension of the body.
Thought it was a good show, I went mainly to see the Meteor & Vampire, seen them down at Newquay a few times (well worth a visit).
RIAT, being run for charity, tends to go out to military air arms and see what it can get. Military assets are usually free or very low cost, which is why you don't see expensive to book classic jets appearing at RIAT that often.
