Weirdos on station platforms

Because the phrase abnormalo isn't generally used, and "People on the station platforms of the Chiltern Railway Line with camcorders on tripods - what are they filming" probably would be too long to fit.
At least it wouldn't have the connotation of an insult - unless in your head the term "weirdo" is a compliment - which WOULD be a bit weird..Moose,
Is the pressure of WM getting to you??? :-)
Pop down to Jocks Lane Park at Bracknell on Monday pm and i will explain all about it to you!!
We have our track open for rides
Seriously, been interested in trains for bloody ages,(and still am) plus buses, tubes, aircraft, ships. Yes have written down numbers when i was a nipper, but now more interested in the history development etc
Yep noticed some rather 'different' members of the public who attend such meetings but they are no different to those here on PH who can tell the make and model of a car from small snippets of pictures.and who bang on about the minutia(sp?) of all car related subjects. Opera and Ballet does my head in and as for Damien Hurst and that ilk of so called ( again imho)modern art who wax lyrical about an umade bed as being art to me need their heads examined, However its their choice and while i am not forced to join them i just let them get on with it.
Each to their own.
All i will say is before you rag the piss out of such people, just step back and look at what you may be into, and ask yourself would someone do the same to me?

I'd hardly class it as weird behavior, but it is odd to someone who doesn't know what they're up to.
I'm no spotter but I quite like trains, and the flat I recently moved into is fairly well situated to watch them. About thirty metres from my back door is a main line with the Javelin and commuter trains trundling along, with about 100 metres from the door is what I presume is the Hitachi maintenance facility for the Javelins.
At the bottom of the street is the main Eurostar line which has that thing screaming along all day, whilst (sadly) the interesting line with all the freight trains and the odd Deltic and Steam locos passes at the end of the road, obscured from view.
I've certainly stood and taken pictures of the trains from my garden to show my dad, perhaps some of the passengers have looked out the window at me in my garden pointing a camera at them and thought "What's that weirdo up to?"

It's possible that because of some work going on in the Chiltern area, they could have been out for some of the engineers trains. Some of the country's latest engines have gone to work some of the trains so I'm guessing that they may have been expecting one of those.
(I'm just guessing this from the info of what passed through Banbury this morning.)

May or may not be on topic, but I read only recently in the railway press that due to the upsurge in freight traffic some of the preserved diesels from the 1960s on preserved railways have been hired to help shift it.Not exactly my cup of tea, but if word got out that, say, a "Western" diesel hydraulic was coming through Princes Risborough on a ballast train, I dare say that there'd be one or two photographers about the place when it went through

If people find amusement and fun from a hobby - why denigrate them?
I really find it quite upsetting that people who don't participate in a particular past time see fit to insult those who do.
Each to their own, I say.
PS - I am not and never have been a "train spotter" although in my youth (many years ago) I could be found hanging around my local airport with binoculars and note book

Hi,
At work we had an 08 on hire years ago which, up until it was used by ourselves, had languished and been working in an enclosed Steelworks shed up north somewhere since way back when. It attracted a lot of interest from spotters and enthusiasts, but as our area was also restricted access they never got close enough to take any decent pics.
Being a bit of an engineering nerd myself (and interested in all kinds of engineering and plant, especially British made from the 50's and 60's) I duly took their cameras and took a load of pics. This went on for a few weeks until their interest waned.
The type of people turning up though varied from the anorak and flask brigade, to retired blokes, teenage kids and blokes like me, interested in that kind of stuff.
Back in the 80's there was a bit of a stigma attached to trainspotters (still is probably), sitting on a platform for hours at a time watching trains, but I guess it's cheaper than traveling for hours on end to watch a bunch of poofters kick a bag of wind about for 90 odd minutes.

I know i shouldn't laugh but it reminds me of this....( particularly like the ''oh bks'' comment at 13sec )

One of the Deltics got hauled out of retirement for something commercial last year IIRC.
I'd like to have seen (and heard) that. Amazing machines.Brigand said:
They do sound fantastic. Every now and then I see a pair of Direct Rail Deltics trundle past my office on their way to or from Dungeness Powerstation with a couple of beige metal crates in tow, I presume its nuclear material heading off somewhere.
They'll be class 37s, not Deltics, although the general shape is similar. Both great sounding locos, although the sounds are completely different.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
