Interesting press release from Boeing on early stage development of a space vehicle to take Dept. of Defense payloads to low earth orbit.

Quite possibly.
The X-37B was classified for some time before it became public.
http://www.space.com/25275-x37b-space-plane.html

It is interesting that no secret is being made of this latest development which is at the concept stage.

Payload formXS-1 is estimated to be 3,000-5,000 lbs which may be broadly consistent with X-37B which is quoted as having a load bay gone size of a large pickup truck.

Ways to start a conspiracy theory.....

Why are the ground crew in full HASMAT suits with breathing apparatus??....

[tinfoil hat]That's what the secret mission was, THEY'VE BEEN SEEDING THE WORLD WITH EBOLA!!! Check the flight plan, I bet it never flew over Israel!!"[/tinfoil hat off]

There you go, cut and copy that over to the David Icke website...

For the same reason they are when the Space Shuttle used to land!!

(In orbit and before the craft re-enters our atmosphere and descends into dense enough air to maneuver with conventional flight control surfaces (ie Ailerons, Elevators, Rudder, etc) it uses small rocket thrusters to maintain the correct orientation. These use "Hypergolic" fuels which spontaneously ignite when mixed. Unfortunately, this useful property of a thruster that is used for irregular short bursts comes with the penalty of the fuels being really rather nasty to us humans. The chemicals used will ruin your day, even in incredibly small concentrations, hence the PPE!

Wiki_Hypergolics

Whilst there is only a low probability that any remaining trace of these fuels will make it down with the craft, a system failure, like a sticking valve for example) could easily result in serious harm to the ground crew. Hence the first approach is done with massive caution.

On the Space shuttle, where egress of the crew in case of emergency after landing had to be considered, a much bigger ground team was used:

Note Orbiter followed and connected to "Purge" trucks to ensure safe local atmosphere for ground crew!!

Just read about the X-37B today too - never knew there was an unmanned space drone orbiting for two years!
Really keen to know what sort of mission this was...

It's the third flight (I think) of the X-37. It is a research vehicle which was originally part of NASA's planned Shuttle treplacement programme.

When NASA decided that they would not be operating winged manned spacecraft in the future, the project was switched to the Department of Defense.

The Me163 Komet team had no such luxuries! Hydrazine and H2O2...

It made a great sound as it glided in, much more noise than I'd have expected. (From the vid, I wasn't there smile)

Suggestion here that X-37B can dock with the ISS.

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2013/03/x-37b-expan...

Nominally it can ship cargo but not crew.

That article makes a lot of sense. However, the current X-37 is a bit too small for carrying personnel to the ISS but it could carry some freight, I suppose.

The problem is that an upscaled version (i.e. bigger and heavier) would need quite a bigger booster than the Atlas V.

With the lack of an operational space shuttle and the current poor relations with Russia, could the XS-1 be configured in an emergency to evacuate astronauts from the ISS?

No, I was using the "Proper Name" of the entity which is the "US Department of Defense".

When quoting a proper name, you use the spelling chosen by those who created the name - even if it is different to what you might normally use.

For instance, I would always use the American spelling for "Pearl Harbor" - as that is the location's proper name.

What about city names? Plenty of example of examples here. Cologne/Köln for example. wink
