I've just heard an odd sounding aircraft and looked up to see what I think was a osprey over my house. (North Lincs) google suggests that they're not routinely operated in the uk with some mentions of 2 being at mildenhall last year but no more info.

Is it likely to have been an osprey?
What else could it have been.

There are some based at either Lakenheath or Mildenhall, I've seen them a few times over Norfolk.
They really do sound a bit odd!

I posted here about seeing one just N of Cambridge a few months ago. It was an odd racket that made me look up.

There are some based at Mildenhall.

The fact that they sound 'odd' means that the usual suspects have complained about the noise. rolleyes

We had a couple over N. Cambs this evening, noisewise a total non event AFAIAC.

I believe its 6 that are a permanent feature in the UK for now (sorry Eric - UK = United Kingdom) they have been a regular feature in the UK low flying system for over a year. As far as I'm aware though they are starting to stretch their wings a bit more which is brilliant for us that don't live in the east.

I watched one as I travelled from Banbury to Silverstone in early July, when I returned from the F1 test.

Was quite surprised seeing one over here but figured with airshow season in full effect it must be due to that.

Obviously not...

As mentioned before they are based at Mildenhall, I regularly see them fly over my house in Norfolk. First time I have ever seen them in the "flesh/metal" brilliant/odd looking things. My little girl loves them.

I was messing about in the sea at a beach just west of Malibu in California back ni June when I heard something odd fly over- I'm quite short sighted and didn't have my glasses on in the sea- when I quizzed my wife about what the two odd sounding aircraft/helicopters were she perfectly described an Osprey ("a bit like the weird helicopters in Avatar laugh ). Gutted I didn't see them frown

They're always buzzing around Mildenhall, I seem them quite regularly from my back garden. Damn things are noisy to say the least.
