For its time, the Zero also had exceptional range. Part of the light weight philosophy was to enable it to have this range - which was considered a basic requirement of a carrier borne aircraft. It wasn't intended to be a point interceptor or ground attack aircraft.

Although rather amusingly the high altitude versions used in-line engines. They lengthened the nose so the various engines would fit, but still left the pointy bit with a cowl.
