So that's about as sensationalist as the documentary then...

'Some reports suggested that there had been a smell of smoke on board the aircraft, but a spokesman for the airport said checks had revealed no signs of smoke damage or fire.'

Presumably they didn't make an emergency landing just for the lols though...

What you don't think this happened?:

Capt: Bored? Fancy a trip to Glasgow
First officer: Yeah why not. Hey do you smell smoke?

obviously they smelt smoke. I'm not saying they were lying but with all the '787's all burst into flames' hype its not surprising the pilots wet themselves when they smelt a whiff!!

More like,

F/O: Oh look the cargo/eng/whatever fire alarm is going off.
Capt: Oh yeah but there's no signs of fire or smoke at all, it's probably spurious.
F/O: Yeah shall we divert to Glasgow just in case.

It's one of his products. Sounds like he was in charge of the lot. hehe

"Due to the safety procedure pilots decided to land at the nearest airport"

May Day, May Day, May Day. This is Lot123 declaring emergency and requesting nearest available runway please.

"in Glasgow."

Where is second closest?

Don't be an arse stovey.

The batteries weren't my area. Another major/critical sub system I did signoff though. Stayed till midnight on the Friday, signing it off for first flight was my last act for the company as I'd already given my notice in a month before to bugger off to the space industry.

The quality of the project wasn't brilliant all the way through at a systemic level. That was just the nature of the program.

What a missed opportunity.

pidsy: I'm taking the Mrs on a Dreamliner.
stooge: Jamaica?
pidsy: I had to; if I didn't we wouldn't have gone on holiday

Flew on a BA 787 last week in to Austin. Smooth easy flight no dramas apart from the IFE rebooting twice across the whole plane. Was in Club and very comfy even for a big lad.

Now trying to get back home from Newark, was booked on the BA188 787 tonight which was 2hrs late coming in and then cancelled due to a lightening strike on the way over from the UK. Not sure how bad the damage is and if its normal to cancel after a strike.

Currently sat at gate 53 waiting for the delayed incoming 787 flight to get here, BA186 scheduled to leave about 1am local. Come on BA time to get home!

I can't help but think that after the couple of high profile issues with 787's getting a little bit singed that any minor incident like the LOT one is published as big news because it involves a 787. Smoke on board or fire warnings are not common as such but happen more often than the media report. They choose to ignore most emergency diversions but with 787's every last one seems to get reported.

to be fair, when you know that said plane has lithium batteries onboard that have previously ignited for reasons we are yet to identify and the risks that involves, if I was the captain and had something smoking that could not be 100% identified, I would chose to get back on the ground without delay.

Yes, I know that have put them in stainless boxes etc, but consider that lithium burns hot enough to melt stainless.

Their radios are st but other than that not really heard anything bad since. Everyone I know who has flown on one thought it was great.

Is Royal Brunei a dry airline?

I was supposed to fly on a BA Dreamliner to Montreal at the start of the month, was well pissed off when it got changed to a ropey old 777. Would happily fly on one if it's an option next time I fly. I feel enough time has passed for it to not be a worry and I know plenty of people who've thoroughly enjoyed their flights on them.
