A fighter drops a napalm for fun at an airshow. Nice massive ploom of black smoke, no doubt filled with chemicals, CO2 and other nasty gasses. All in the name of a fun airshow, with mock fighting and warfare in the background.

Anyone else think this is slightly strange?

The amount of CO2 will be utterly trivial; probably less than from the fuel the plane burnt in the demonstration. I've no idea what other nasty chemicals might be in whatever it dropped, though.

That's terrible, isn't it.

It should have gone off in series from right to left.

Although I admit that it does look cool; it's a military weapon heavily critised when used - just seems very odd to show this off in a "cool" way at an airshow.

Ok let me rephrase as this wasn't meant to come across as an eco-warrior post, I'm aware that volcanoes also contribute considerably to CO2 levels!

It's more of a bh that I will have to pay £500 a year to insure an E92 M3 because of "co2 and emissions", but this goes on in the world. laughcurse

FFS that's a news story? It happens all the time at American airshows. We do it on a smaller scale at some UK airshows too. Must be a VERY slow news day.

When will they get bored and ferry spectators over to an island to watch a "small tactical nuke?"

Maybe they could start by showing them a genuine napalm drop for starters, instead of a load of barrels full of diesel being ignited completely independently to the aircraft passing overhead at the time. wink

As others have said, its not napalm, that stuff is banned in most militaries now, its just pyrotechnics on the ground doing that - the same stuff they'll use for Hollywood movies.

In the 1950's when they were testing atom bombs in the Nevada desert the mushroom clouds could easily be seen from Las Vegas so it was not uncommon for clubs, bars and casinos to host parties where the highlight was a view of the distant nuclear blast.

I do wonder how far they want to push exhaust cleanliness- and how much HC and particulates something like a recycling centre fire kicks out relative to road vehicles.

Whatever they can tax will be bad. 'This is "bad" so will we tax it'. Ching.

At the 2012 Farnborough Airshow to RAF Tornado GR4s carried out a mock attack on the airfield. Plenty of bangs, smoke and pyrotechnics.

I have many such demonstrations over the years - no big deal, frankly.
