Interesting article about the designs for a new tube train which will eventually be driverless. The tender went out for the manufacture in February.
I really hope these get to be built in the UK.

I also assume that this is what the unions have been up in arms about, the introduction of driverless trains??

Let's hope they hurry up and arrive soon as then the mollycoddled over paid, over holidayed (is that a word?) tossers that keep striking will have to get proper jobs and realise just how bloody good they've had it.

ETA, plus it'll upset the Union and that is always a brucie bonus.

First line (Piccadilly) not due until 2027 at the earliest and more likely 2030. New trains will be delivered with train cabs but will have the ability to be converted to cab-less without major work. Then the Bakerloo and then the Central and drain. This will take years, if not decades, to fully implement and will still only be 3 and a bit lines converted to NOPO.

Lines already converted to ATO (Jubilee, Northern, Victoria, Central) cannot be converted to driverless as the stock is not compatible plus an order for extra 95 + 96 stock to supplement the existing fleet to get the most out of the new signalling on the Jubilee and Northern is being put out to tender.

New S stock will be ATO one day (A lot longer than planned due to Bombardier failing with the re-signalling contract) but you're realistically looking at the next generation to be driverless. As LUL expect around 50 years out of them, you'll be waiting for a long time for the sub surface lines to be converted.

You also have to remember that the proposed trains WILL be driverless one day but they will NOT be staffless. It is expected to run DLR style with a 'train captain' on board. Like the DLR, No captain - no train. You'll still be at the mercy of the unions.

To be honest, any one using the Tube today will be long retired if not in the grave before the Tube can be considered fully driverless.

Nah, I had a train set and realised quite quickly how easy it is to push buttons and levers without needing to be paid £40k odd, get loads of holiday and still feel the need to strike because I was so hard done by. The poor dears.

Not bitter at all, I'm quite happy to earn more than that and not have to spend my day stuck in a dingy hole rattlign along under London.

Actually scrap that, I am slightly bitter that they're not happy with the cushty racket that they've got going on and are constantly after more.

I love this country.

Even the dim and ignorant can earn "more than that".

so is it a 'cushty racket' or a horrible 'stuck in a dingy hole' job?

Are the two mutually exclusive?

i suppose not

I suppose for some the dingy-holeness is overcome by the cushtiness

You seem rather confused.

Get over to N,P & E for a little education - perhaps you could have a cuddle with fellow 'not got a clue but got lots to say' experts.

Driverless trains work perfectly well on the DLR.

Thanks for the advice poppet.

How about educating me if I don't apparently have a clue, what is so bad about a tube drivers lot that they feel the need to repeatedly strike?

the current tube whinging fro mthe unions is about closing the ticket offices on the station and therefore slimming headcount over time / making the ticket office staff put on a coat and actually interact with the unwashed on concourses and platforms in a customer service role

And in Paris, Dortmund and Tokyo.

Neither is a massive Victorian system.

No, you're right and I'm wrong.

You aren't deliberately being an ignorant .

Driving is pushing one button and pulling one lever.

isn't the driver just there to inspire confidence on the Jubilee line anyway?
