We're heading up to Blyton in December for a track day I booked for the mister (bday), and wondered whether (if we could get booked in) Scampton would be worth a visit.

Anyone had a tour, and if so what sort of things and how much is there to see? Worth doing?

RAF Scampton has a museum (in one of the hangars) which is open to the general public by prior arrangement only.

Contact numbers are here.

I doubt very muc that you would get to see the Reds unless they are having a public open day (which are fairly rare).

And a very small museum at that, with a couple of vehicles in the hangar like a green goddess. You'd also be able to take in nihpggers grave which is in front of one of the hangars. As G15 said you are unlikely to see the Reds.

Thanks - I'd got the contact details and the need to book as it's not general admission, but was just wondering whether anyone else had been an what sort of things would be in the heritage centre really.

I'll email them and see if we can get a look round on our preferred date! Thanks!

I went a few years ago with work, basically 1 small room with a few artefacts (pieces of a wing, models, photos that sort of thing) then there's guy gibbons office and a room mocked up with a bed IIRC then into the hangar you have a blue steel nuclear bomb, a couple of fire engines and a few cockpits like a lightning. Outside there's a tall boy, grand slam and a bouncing bomb.

And that is about it. And whilst you drive through scampton you can see how derelict and run down it is as its all listed but no money being spent on the upkeep of the place. If your going out your way I wouldn't bother if you are driving past the main gate on your route then it's worth a pop in.

Where are you travelling from as Neaark has a good air museum.

East Kirby just up the road is worth it if you've got a day spare, loads to see there including Just Jane.

Lincolnshire is full of aviation sites. Best sites for visits are in no particular order

East Kirkby a good museum housed on an old ww2 base
Coningsby Where you can get a tour of the bbmf hangar
Doncaster airport to do a hangar tour of the vulcan

Hmm, some food for thought - thanks all. We're travelling from Cambridgeshire, and Scampton wouldn't be able to accommodate us on a Saturday anyway, so will have a look at a couple of the others and see what I can arrange!

Except it's a Saturday and they'll be closed.

I'm guessing your going up and back in a day. If travelling along the A1 then Newark air museum is about 3min from the junction at newark. Saves a detour across to East Kirkby.

Hmm, you've possibly answered my next question - no possibility of an arranged trip on a Saturday then I guess. Not quite a day trip, we're heading up on the Saturday for a track day the next day and he's a bit of plane geek wink so wondered if there was something military and interesting en route....

None at all I'm afraid as its a working RAF station and now they're into winter maintenance the engineers are allowed their weekends back.

Your 2 choices in the area really are East kirkby which is the home to the lancaster just Jane or the Newark air museum which has a big selection of aircraft. There are some smaller museums dotted all around the area.

Or try to pre book a 'big tin triangle tour'

I can recommend Newark.

There's a couple of aircraft there that are in my Log Book. thumbup

They might even have the Vulcan open for you to go on board.

Newark air museum is well worth a trip they have an eclectic mix of aircraft, East Kirkby is great if you have any links with bomber command.
