I know the power boys don't do spin recovery as part of their PPL which is a bit worrying.

inspired to go do some work now !!
I didn't realise you could do low-flying like that in a glider. I assume it's simply a case of carrying a lot of speed that you can use to get back some altitude once you've finished? I saw a Discus in a field near where I live on Sunday. It's a corn field that had just been harvested, so it wasn't the intended finish point! I went and had a chat, and seeing the aircraft close-up made me really keen to have a go...

Hard to tell from that (very impressive) video because there appears to be lots of footage all stitched together but some of the low level stuff looks like they are ridge soaring and of course there will be lift over the tops of those hills. Not sure about skimming the lake though, as you say he must have had a lot of knots on the clock plus you do get some ground effect. That or they clipped away from the shot as he sank into the water hehe

Had my trial/experience flight yesterday.

Loved it!

The pilot asked me if I had flown before, I explained my little previous (15 years ago ATC), did a quick brief, then we went up. First launch we didn't find any rising air and landed after a quick circuit. I got a free second launch, so we were up again, gained a little altitude then he let me take over. I flew the circuit until the last turn onto final approach.

It felt so good to be in a cockpit again!

I have a month of free membership with the club, so I think I will get back down again in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, as nice and friendly as that club is, it is bit too far for me, so I will be looking at York I think.

Nice one. It's been interesting reading the thread.

Thread bump.

I have really enjoyed reading this and am seriously thinking about learning. Local club is Lasham I think- I live in Haslemere.

The enthusiasm on here is very infectious.

I passed my paragliding CP last year and have some nice soaring flights in the company of sailplanes from the local club. They look proper impressive when they come blatting down the ridge. Personally I like the "walk up a hill and fly" thing, but it all looks good.

I mainly flew from Booker which doesn't have a ridge but occasionally we'd take the glider to Dunstable for some flying and it's quite odd flying the ridge and sharing the airspace with some chaps strapped to a kite hanging underneath in a sleeping bag!

18 months since I started this thread, and I'm still no closer to gliding!

In fact I am getting further away. I start a lower paid job next week so this will be another dream to put on the back burner for a while.

I am not really far away from Lasham. I may have to book a taster session and like was said earlier state my intentions its not a jolly up!
