'Downwind' Gallen once had the record in a Spit, at just over 400mph I think. Clever in a plane that didn't do 400mph on the level.
It was 'Downwind' Gillan (Wg.Cdr, John Gillan DFC*, AFC) CO of 111 Sqn and it was in a Hurricane, not a Spit.
Feb 1938, Turnhouse to RAF Northolt, 327 miles in 48 mins (avg speed 409mph)

I've got a feeling 'Black Mike' the Phantom recently saved by Brunty? holds the record these days.
Yes, Black Mike still holds a record, but not the same route as Gillan did in 1938. Black Mike's run, flown by the then current CO of 111 Sqn, Wg.Cdr.John Brady with Nav Sqn.Ldr. Mike Pugh, was done 50 years to the month of Downwind Gillan's in Feb 1988, but ran from Lands End to John O'Groats, 590 miles in 46m 44secs (avg. speed 757mph)

There's a very distinct possibility that my mother as a little girl, witnessed Downwind Gillan's high speed arrival over RAF Northolt.
