Most of the information about what forces went south in 82 is readily available, what's less obvious is what forces stayed or were sent down after the islands where liberated.

It's common knowledge that Invincible stayed on to offer air cover until relieved by Illusrious, she stayed until such time that the runway had been improved sufficiently for fast jets.

Anyone able to flesh out more of what came and went 82-84?

Post 82, My Mate was stationed there for 18 months "picking up Penguin's" off the runway ... he wasnt particularly skilled at anything, and saw the Army as a salary because no one would employ him otherwise, so he kinda got the st jobs...

I believe his role was to go and usher birds off the runway pre-landings... <-- I only have this from his "mates" though

My grandad went down after the war whilst serving in the navy. His accommodation was the Bibby resolution which was a floating accommodation block originally built for the offshore oil and gas companies.

Years later he was the last Station Warrant Officer at HMS Osprey (RNAS Portland) when that closed the accommodation block arrived in the harbour and turned into HM prison Weare for a few years before closing and going back to offshore oil work.

Any questions you want me to ask?
