What did I just see - steam locomotive
Discussion
Is that Bittern that was renamed Silver Link and on display at the Stephenson museum in North Tyneside?
If so, great to see her back with her correct name and in steam.
She looked so forlorn in that shed on Tyneside. Odd how they named the whole retail park there Silverlink after a loco caloed Bittern.

This is a good short montage of clips from YouTube of Bittern on it's 90mph runs last year. Not bad when you consider she's 75 years old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ez5og1iFU8
Where is the last scene shot? Great footage.truck71 said:

It could get as far as Paddington but what then, is there a secret set of tracks somewhere or does it have to go out to somewhere to join the other region's tracks and if so where?

Tonker's pretty well covered it but for interest here's the route of 60009 Sir Nigel Gresley travelling from York to Southall last month. You will see the bit where it uses the link via Willesden Jcn to Acton West.http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t14/t1128q.htm
In case anyone is interested there's two Black Fives hauling tomorrow's train from Horsham to Ely which will pass through London, I'm going to try and get to Stratford or Leyton to have a look. Timings here http://www.steamdreams.co.uk/executables/GT410WebC...
I lived in Maidenhead most of my life and often travelled into London and I wasn't aware of any other ways to get North other than via Paddington and the tube, I guess they aren't used as passenger lines at all then? I was aware of stations like West Acton and Old Oak Common but thought they were just storage depots.

Indeed, as you pass Acton Main Line, heading towards Paddington you will see some lines peeling off to the north just before Old Oak Common sheds. These lead to the East Coast Mainline (GNR) at Cricklewood as well as the West Coast main line (LMS) at Willesden and the old GC/Met main line at Neasden. Ilovetwiglets said:

The former Acton marshalling yard next to Acton Main Line station is now used by stone trains. Old Oak Common has been a traction maintenance depot since way back into the 19th century. Steam in the old days, FGW and Heathrow Express/ Connect these days. The North London line passenger service, which once ran from Richmond to Broad Street is now part of Overground and operates a circular service between Richmond/ Clapham Junction and back to Clapham via Highbury & Islington amongst other places. The line connects every main route to the west, north and east out of London, but the connecting spurs are generally freight only.
Until just recently there was a "train service" between Ealing Broadway and Wandsworth Road, which was actually a taxi. It appears to have gone the same way as the one daily train from Wandsworth Road to Kensington Olympia https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/withdr...
