I don't know about production costs for JLR .
When I had something to collect from the special operations workshops , optional bling wheels were being fitted to customers cars and the original alloys and tyres, which were brand spanking new ,were being skipped as it was not cost effective to reprocess them through the system .
Go and price up a set of original alloys and tyres at your local JLR dealer .

This place seems to specialise in damaged in transit vehicles. Plenty of interesting stuff: http://www.s-w-s.co.uk/stock_list.asp?qryNo=14&...

Wonder what the story is with the new VAG stuff - some of it has the most minor of damage?KTF said:

OooEr Not that cheap on that site
Given that some of the damage could be fixed by a SMART guy for a few hundred or simply ignored, am not surprised they are near retail prices.Condi said:

Spot on Max. 56 tonne impact crusher and write off is out of the question.
The things are just a load of modular parts anyway and what will look like huge damage will more likely be the outer casings that for all intents are just there to keep the st and body parts out of the workings or a couple of belt conveyors that can just be unbolted and replaced.
The only people that will be talking write off will be the paddy standing on the side of the dock trying to buy it cheap.
Yes and no. How can you warranty a machine which has been under salt water for even a few days? The engine and everything will have to be stripped, and even then all the bearings will have water penetration; problems which might not show for 2 years? I suspect it will be written off, as the costs of having it stripped back to components for inspection, as well as the replacement parts, will be more than its worth, even at £50k. Remember, written off just means that the insurer has paid for the repairs with a new machine. So it wont be scrapped, but the insurer will pay out to the manufacturer, and then sold off by the insurance co at 3/4s of the list, or whatver it makes. That way someone else takes the risk of running it with no backup.

I'll wager JLR will claim on the insurance and the cars will end up in an special 'Osaka' auction. To try and pass them off through the dealer network later might lead to unforeseen future warranty claims and reputational damage. Does anyone know where these cars were headed ? If Singapore, they will be RHD.

I will offer £5k for a RangeRover as long as it starts/runs and body is ok. I don't need a warranty.
I might stretch to £6k!!(RR that is)
£7 and a quarter..
The auctioning might happen, but its still hassle to draw out, find auction, prepare paperwork etc. Then you have which country to auction in as they are LHD and then you have to check the relevant selling laws and legislations for that country. then you have to transport and store them at the relevant auction, worth bearing in mind if this is abroad
As said before its not clear who "owns the cars" as they might be the reasonability of the importer/subsidiary of the group and LR have no interest in them
Plus usually companies will have bigger fish to fry than worrying about a few dented cars.

It won't be worth their while reselling the cars direct to end users, they'd want to inspect, ask loads of questions, complain if it went wrong etc.
If they're not simply crushed I'll bet on them being sold as a job lot for parts and be stripped. I doubt very very much they'll ever be seen on the road, anywhere in the world.
