Is it true what they say?.... that the Typhoon is a fantastic..... airshow crowd pleaser....
whilst the Tornado is a fantastic tool for the RAF.

Heard it a few times by some that work in the RAF.

From an air show spectator's perspective, the typhoon is impressive but I'll always have a soft spot for the tornado. It just looks right, pointy, dirty, aggressive. It'll be a sad day when they retire. I've no idea which is best operationally.

I remember when the Tornado was called MRCA - multirole combat aircraft - and thought at the time it was too big to be a fighter and too small to be a bomber.

I think the only way to tell will be in 20+ years when the Typhoon has reached the same length of service.

From what I understand, the Tornado excels at posting a bomb through someone's postbox, whereas the Typhoon is excellent when that someone is moving and also trying to kill you.

Pretty sure the Typhoon would be better at everything the Tornado does

My grandparents call the typhoon EFA and on a visit to Coningsby a few years ago my Gran was wearing a gold EFA pin badge given to her on a visit to Warton the year I was born (1985) Amazing really how long it's been in development.

I remember seeing the EAP at Farnborough in the late 80s.

And I remember when it was called AFVG. OK technically a different aircraft (like EAP and Typhoon) but all part of the development process.

The Tornado is probably still the best high speed / low level strike aircraft in the world.

Well it has swing wings so it 'must' be cooler - see also F-14 Tomcat

I was working about 2 miles north of Warton in 1984 and someone managed to get me a Tornado keyring!

I also have a resin model of a Typhoon prototype with 'EAP' on the fin - wonder if it has any value?

Depends if you are talking potential or right now - right now, the FGR4 can't hold a candle to the GR4 in terms of strike capability, or it would be deployed on Op SHADER... Will it be better? Of course, given the right amount of investment (time/money). The same could be said when the Typhoon first came in - it could out-manoeuvre the F3 but the systems were not integrated well enough for it to be operationally 'better'. It depends when your time-slice is IMHO.

Crazy to think this photo was taken 29 years ago at Farnborough.

Is that the one now in the foyer at loughborough university?

Anyhow. one word which means the tornado is better in every measurable effect: Swing Wings

That's my model! (Though mine doesn't have an undercarriage and two missiles seem to have been 'fired' over the years...)

I wonder how many there are?
