Yes.

I'm not that knowledgeable about trains but I love anything to do with transport and thoroughly enjoyed my visit there.

Wanted to go today but ended up with plans and now they seem to be falling through frown

Yes I went about 4-5 years ago and about 14-15 years ago. A brilliant museum the last time I went I took the lady at the time who had little interest and even she came away having enjoyed the museum she was extremely fascinated by the streamlined duchess of Hamilton and I think if she could she would have taken it home.

I found the food to be good as well and you eat on the platform next to the trains all parked up if you need lunch.

And best of all, it's free!

Definitely worth a visit. Do let us know how they are getting on with putting Scotsman back together.

Flying Scotsman isn't currently at NRM York, it's being 'corrected' at Riley & Sons, Bury. But you can see progress updates here:

I don't like the way they force you into a supermarket checkout queue to try and make you pay to get in.

Why not? I'm assuming as its free to go in they need as many donations as possible to keep going.

Yes, I thought it was great. Don't miss the basement part, where you can wander around looking at shelves full of exhibits in storage - just like museums used to be before they became "interactive" and all that guff.

If anyone's at the NRM at half term come and say hello - I'll be taking one of our locos there (from the Ffestiniog) and we'll have it in steam on the 2' gauge track there. You can even have a footplate ride smile

NRM is a fantastic, free, museum with a wealth of exhibits, history and information.

Loads of stuff to see and enough variety to entertain every age.

A "must see" if you are in York.

Excellent museum, well worth a visit ( though it's over 10 years since I was last there ). Just the smell as you walk in is evocative of the age of steam smile

The missus and I dropped in for a couple of hours just before christmas - neither of us are into trains really (though I do have a bit of steam engine fetish to be fair), but we both really enjoyed it and could have spent much longer there. It's not as "trainspotter" as you might think.

Cheers, Thanks for that.

I did bump into him there about twenty years ago, not changed a bit. (Very good teacher actually...I was in his model railway club... He had a special interest in the Bury-Manchester line, as I believe he was from Bury)

Regarding 4472, I might call round to Rileys to have a butchers as I only work round the corner......smile

Thanks for the positive responses, it looks like a must - if only for the smell (of nostalgia) biggrin.

Great place. The only challenge you'll have is seeing everything in half a day. I've dropped in for the day, every now and then, since being a kid.

It's a great place to hang out for a couple of hours.

It's quite clear before you get in that it's free but that a donation is appreciated. I've never been over keen on the staff badgering you for it, that to me is admission but before you call me a tight wad, I always put a couple of quid in the slot before I leave.

The cost of food there is bonkers, so I would suggest you take your own or wait until you get back into York itself.

Other than that, have a great time.

I remember when the NRM first opened there was an admission charge, but this was dropped after a few years...

It's great that it is now free, but it's not too much to drop a couple of quid in a collection box is it?

Not been for over five years, must make the effort next time I'm up there.......
