We could all chip in and buy them, then set up PH Squadron and hire ourselves out to the US Army in a kind of Private Finance Initiative sort of way!

The USAF don't want to get rid of it. What's going on here is that someone has asked for a budget cut because the F-35 is so expensive, and they've picked the A-10 because they know that plenty of people will say "it's too useful to cut!". Nobody will cut the F-35, so the USAF ends up with more money.
