Do the Yanks help out with UK air defence?
I'm currently sitting under the flight path for Lakenheath & they seem to have a pretty busy programme, not to mention the perfect a/c for interceptions, would've thought they'd jump at the chance to have a nosey at a Bear...
The yanks operate F-15E Strike Eagles from Lakenheath, not air-defence aircraft, so no they don't help with UK air defence, and have not ever done so in the past either IIRC.I'm currently sitting under the flight path for Lakenheath & they seem to have a pretty busy programme, not to mention the perfect a/c for interceptions, would've thought they'd jump at the chance to have a nosey at a Bear...

2 of the 3 Sqns at Lakenheath have F15E, the other has F15C.
Aah, yes, forgot about that....mindset is still with the old TFW setup as was for years before. Should have remembered it though as they lost their twin-stick D a/c just last year when it came down near that school.aeropilot said:

I seem to recall when the septics first got involved in Vietnam on the ground with the early M16's, they ended up changing the ammo and/or rifling in the weapons as they found the 5.56 rounds were tumbling after a certain distance and causing nasty tissue damage - all very non-PC back in the sixties
5.56 ballistics hmm.I seem to recall when the septics first got involved in Vietnam on the ground with the early M16's, they ended up changing the ammo and/or rifling in the weapons as they found the 5.56 rounds were tumbling after a certain distance and causing nasty tissue damage - all very non-PC back in the sixties

The septics did have aircraft assigned directly as UK air defence assets, but that was back in the fifties - based at RAF Shepherds Grove in Suffolk.
During the 80s I believe there was a plan that if the balloon went up and the A10s from Bentwaters Suffolk got deployed to West Germany, USAF F16s would be sent to Bentwaters for air defence purposes. In peacetime though, using one country's aircraft to enforce another country's air defence zone seems a bit odd.

You do have QRA in the Baltic covering Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. NATO countries take it in turns to cover QRA, typhoons were also due to deploy to Iceland to conduct QRA but after getting shafted by the banking crisis the government turned it off. At least the BBC got the plane right. Check out the photo accompanying this article. Neither of the planes shown feature in the story!http://www.scotsman.com/news/uk/raf-intercept-russ...

excellent news, I demand some pretty girls in uniform, a large map, some long pushers, small models of spitfires and bears and a some large flashing signs that say things like 'tangmere ready', 'dispersal', and 'angels one-five'

With a Bear service ceiling of 45,000 feet I'm afraid your Spits won't be able to the intercept. But we could buzz Crimea with a PR version and see how the Russkies like it...signed

NB If Ukraine works, then no doubt Putin will try the same on the Baltic states. I wonder what we will do?

Nothing.........and he's knows it, which is why he's doing what he's doing.Putin is no fool and he's sat back and waited for enough fools to take up political office in western govts before doing what he's now doing.
