I'm not familiar with Portsmouth; where is a good viewing spot please? (Preferably with free parking) smile

Thanks!

We sailed out of Pompey on my frigate in 1978 and a pipe came over the tannoy."If you look to starboard see the USS Nimitz". Not only did we look right, but up as well and it was a couple of miles away. I had never seen a bigger ship. It was humongous.

Not Portsmouth. Stokes Bay, Gosport.

There are several car parks.

Stokes bay car parks charge until 6pm, any of them will give a good view as the carriers normally anchor in the focus of the bay.
If you want to get closer their are normally boat trips from Portsmouth.

Somehow the idea of HMS Gordon Brown visiting New York doesn't seem so exciting...
HMS Arthur Balfour, HMS Lord Salisbury, HMS Henry Campbell-Bannerman or HMS Herbert Asquith would be more contemporary.

Did you upset the Captain of the Eisenhower?
Security was very tight on that one - can't remember what was going on at the time.
Ronnie Reagan got shot in 1981; perhaps that was why.

On reflection I think Kings and Queens are better. Perhaps in a few years we will launch HMS King Charles III - though whether it's a proper fighting ship or a Hoseasons hireboat with quick-firing .177 air pistol remains to be seen.

I think the only PM worthy of a ship name is Winston Churchill.

'HMS Edward Milliband'. fking hell where's my passport, time to emigrate....

Well I saw absolutely no Americans last night. Apparently they're all coming ashore today smile
I did drive along Stokes Bay at around 4am and the ship looked very impressive and all lit up (sorry no pics)

Stokes bay will be the best place. I'm off down there at lunch to have a look and some chips by the sea.

The pleasure boats are doing rides out to see her departing from Gunwarf quay for £7
every couple of hours for the rest of the week. or you can go up the spinnaker tower for £9 and get a great view from height
