Just wondering , the nuclear reactors on this can power it for 20 years all over the world without refuelling, which is incredible in itself, but just how much actual radioactive material would be needed in these reactors?
In the order of a tonne I believe. She's got a pair of 550 MW reactors, by comparison Sizewell B is rated at just under 1200MW.That was pretty much what I thought too
ETA: Wikipedia's a terrible thing, it draws you in and is full of inconsistancies
It reckons the reactors for the Ford class carriers are 300MW and 3 times the output of the Nimitz's reactors. Other sources seem to reckon the reactors in a Nimitz are between 94 and 250Mw, so it would seem that 550MW figure is bks

Roosevelt has left the building.
Y'know, it's been great having the crew of both ships down here for a few days. Yes, I'm sure there will have been the occasional beer infused skirmish, but the boys and girls I've encountered this week have been nothing but polite and engaging. I've been "Excuse me sir"ed a number of times by young men and women needing directions to various bars, convenience stores or just a quick press of a cameraphone button for them. They were all easily noticeable in their groups of three or more, being stocky with short hair, wearing a bulky overcoat and almost without fail having a backpack of some sort over their shoulder too. However, even in my usual bar, despite it being overrun with groups enjoying a drink or two, there was a marked difference between the Americans and your typical loud mouthed group of Brits abroad.
They can come again.
