We had a suspected Russian sub snag a fishing trawler a couple of days ago off Ardglass and today (very overcast no visual) very loud aircraft overhead.

Don't get anything like this apart from the odd airshow. Skies starting to clear now and I can hear aircraft in the distance.

What aircraft I'm I likely to see. Definitely military aircraft.

There are exercises (NATO) off Scotland so aircraft might be passing over N.I.

BBC article said:
Mr James said fishing boats were sometimes damaged by submarines, but added that if it had been a British submarine, the crew would have been obliged to stop and check on the safety of the fishermen.

"It is possible that it was a Russian submarine," he said.

"You cannot always prevent it, but if an incident like this did happen the [Royal Navy] protocols say that the submarine would immediately surface to check on the health and welfare of the people involved and this one did not.
Possible it was one of ours and they didn't realise that they had caught a net. I'm not a submariner but I have seen 'The Hunt for Red October' several times and with the enormous knowledge that brings I can say with some authority that I think they would have noticed. wink

Not unless we are back in the 1960s.

Jet aircraft noise continued for some time after my last post, however it was well into the distance.

I was hoping to see something interesting.

We also had this last week. Very unusual for this neck of the woods.

Ardglass?? I'm getting all misty eyed. My gran used to live in Coney Island before she passed away and I spent many a happy time out there during my childhood.

Didn't see any subs though. Just seals.

DID a sub (Russian/British/or otherwise) snag a trawler? Or is it an attempt to blag a new net out of the MOD? I understand this is a trick that has been tried before.

Right, back to the planes.....

The Russian ones are easy to spot, just look for the plume of smoke.

Well it was Tornados on a training mission which apparently doubled up as a promotion for the air show coming up next September?????

There was me thinking we had gone to Defcon3 or something.
