I have a Fletcher Bowrider 17" and need a new winch for it. I understand most of the selection criteria but there are some terms I am not sure about. The boat is launched off a relatively flat beach and not a steep slipway so I only need something rated 3/4-1 the weight of the boat (I prefer to go overkill, so will get something thats rated to at least the weight of the boat more than likely).

However, In this link below, I take it the working capacity is the maximum load it can pull, but what is the breaking capacity? Is this the capacity at which it fails or the capacity at which the ratchet brake will fail? In my work I've had some experience with lifting equipment, so am thinking the 'Working capacity' is the S.W.L (Safe working load) and the breaking capacity is the failure load, correct?

Most of the winches above don't give details on the winch ratio, but is that something I need to consider?
Thanks

Hi, you are right. Working capacity is SWL & breaking capacity is when there is a component failure on the winch stopping it working (could be ratchet or other part).
