I've sat in a queue of fuming motorists at the Errol crossing for 12 minutes only for 1 tractor unit and 4 [empty] bulk wagons to eventually come through...

The signal box, to be fair, is miles away...

Is that the exception rather than the rule? I suspect (and hope) that it is, but if road traffic is routinely being delayed for that long for a single train then I'd suggest taking it up with Network Rail.

There's all sorts of reasons why, on the odd occasion, the barriers might be down for a seemingly excessive length of time. In this case, the train might have been delayed in section for some reason - bear in mind that, in some long sections, there's no way of telling exactly where the train is, so it's just a case of waiting 'x' minutes, lowering the barriers, clearing the signals and then sitting wondering where on Earth the train's got to.

Off topic, but in one of his books Gerry Fiennes mentioned the practice of the guard removing the tail lamp from his train as a quick way of getting a "stop and examine."

When the driver, in response to the question "Where's your tail lamp" replies "Never mind my tail amp. where's my bloody train!" you knew you had a problem...
