Thankfully can be sorted even if we have to wait. At least it did not happen last year when the Canadian Lanc was in town.

My Dad once changed all 4 Merlins on a Lanc in a single shift and had O-Oboe ready to go without missing a single sortie.

Mind you, there was a war on.

I think it's the damage to the engine bearers that's the big problem here, not merely the engine change.

Indeed, and the BBMF could do a straight forward engine swap in a couple of days today, pretty much as the CWH team did on their Lanc while over here last year.

But, this isn't a case of 'just' an engine swap to do.

Thr Rumour from fairly well placed people here is that that could well be the last time 474 flies as 'Thumper'.

She was due to go to Duxford for a major service at the end of this season, BBMF are currently assessing if it would now be appropriate to send her away now for its work, giving them the time to also fix all the other damage its caused.

Well, that was my first thought the day after the incident when looking at the fire damage photos that they might consider doing that...........

But then I though, how will they do that, as they can't fly it to Duxford, so it would mean doing the full on break up and road transport her there, or the Duxford team will have to do the 'major' and tail rebuild work in-situ at BBMF...???

Correct me if I am wrong but one of the points in the design brief for Roy Chadwick was that the bomber had to be able to be dismantled and transported by road easily in the case of heavy damage so that it could be rescued and returned to service. I also seem to remember when reading in Flypast about the re-spar that multi-block electrical connectors where fitted to the wiring harness to make dismantling the a/c a simpler job. I could of course be totally wrong. wink

Yes, that's what I was referring to, although not such an easy undertaking in 2015 compared to 70 years ago.

Can't find a better shot, but a split for transport Lanc on a fleet of Queen Mary transport trailers.

Wow, thanks for that pic. I understand, or at least I think that I do, what you mean by it will be more difficult than it was back in the day. I do think that the current ground crew of the RAF will find a way of getting the centre piece of the BBMF back where she belongs, she's not just a fitting tribute to those lost in 39 - 45 but also all of those lost before and since, many recently. She'll return one day. smile

If the RAF assess it as safe to do so in its current condition, can it not be flown over on 3 engines?
