... in Liverpool this weekend. Should be an amazing sight. Anyone popping along to have a look?
I think I might pop up to New Brighton or Birkenhead to watch if the weather isn't too inclement

Are they real liners or just lardy cruise ships with a badge on?
The difference is the hull shape. Liners are sleek and designed to cut through Atlantic storms; cruise ships are apartment blocks on a barge.
Well said Simpo, how long before people wake up to the reality of these overpriced, overcrowded, floating deathtrap cash extractors masquerading as ships, staffed by gabbling greedy halfwits posing around in Circus uniforms. The difference is the hull shape. Having been on P&O's Ventura it is quite amazing how every facet is about cash extraction. The strong-willed can keep their wits switched on and their wallets buttoned up, but P&O for one regards every passenger as a cashpoint to be milked (mixed metaphor but you get the idea!).Polo shirts on special offer - only £50!

Maybe on some lines but Cunard is another level of service.Impasse said:
I just cannot get excited about this. They're simply floating Butlins for well off pensioners but burdened with a cynical naming policy.
Victoria and Eliazbeth, yes I would agree with you.Mary 2 though is a proper transatlantic luxury liner, just like in the days before air travel when the super rich crossed the ocean in unrivalled style. It must be a fantastic experience to go to America by first class boat
A definition of a liner is that it can leave Southampton in any reasonably expected weather conditions, whereas a cruise ship might have to delay departure due to the weather.
An interesting yet little known fact is that neither the Queen Mary not the Queen Elizabeth needed an escort to cross the Atlantic during WW2, too fast for a U-boat to achieve a firing solution. Also too fast for most Allied escorts.

I was down there today and last night, what a sight it was - especially the synchronised about-turn!
Looks like you were stood pretty much where I was for the about-turns.- images*
I too would have loved to stay for the light show but trains etc. The mrs and kids were fed up after an hour and disappeared into the town to shop. It's hard to get them enthused about anything like this.
