"AeroVenture" The word alone is enough to strike terror into the hearts of everyone who likes the more traditional museum. Rest assured though there is absolutely nothing adventurous or interactive about this place - even the exhibits that are intended to be interactive don't quite seem to work. Which is absolutely fine by me.

Also incorporates the Yorkshire Helicopter Preservation Group, and many of the best exhibits are indeed helicopters. The place is crammed with interesting bits and pieces, not too many complete aircraft, but a few cockpits, some of which you can climb into. There is also a decent Falklands War section, and a very nice room full of aircraft engines. Here are a few pics, excuse the quaility, I forgot my proper camera:

The restorations of some of the exhibits were not quite finished:

I don't think I've ever seen as many model aircraft in a museum anywhere - there are hundreds all over the place. There is a display of old kits too, which was nice:

The museum shop was very well stocked with kits, and Xtracolour paints as well if any modellers out there are interested. The staff seemed quite open to letting people get close to the exhibits and open up cockpits if requested. I got the impression it would be very good if you were looking for specific aircraft details.

Obviously it's old school, a bit tatty (which isn't a problem afaic), but well worth a visit for the sake of £6.50 if you're in the Doncaster area.

Is that an ex-Argentinian Skyhawk?

It's just a large model, possibly for radar signature tests.

This is about 2 minutes from my house, and I always forget it's there! Keep meaning to go actually.

It does look like a great place G thanks for this

If I ever get over that way I suspect I'll spend a few hours tatting about in there

Love that display of old and elderly Airfix kits, superb

Phew, would have had some explaining to do if that was real!

I had thought the nearest real Skyhawk was the one in New York on the USS Intrepid- we sent someone over there a couple of years ago to carry out some research for the Airfix kit.

Closest would be the 1 on display in Holland I think or the 2 in France.

I thought it might have been a damaged aircraft left at Stanley, like the Pucaras we picked up.

I didn't think that the Argentinians operated any jet aircraft out of Stanley during the Falklands War (yes - I know technically the Pucara is jet engined - being a turboprop).

Not operated but perhaps landed damaged? As that model looks damaged. Just a thought.

No record of any damaged A-4s landing in the Falklands. Any that were damaged by defensive fire crashed - as far as I know.

Stanley only had a grass strip back then.

The Argentine Navy had several Aermacchi MB-339's at Stanley during the war.

Erm, actually Stanley had a 4000 ft paved runway that opened on 1 May 1979.

OK - the old memory's going. Maybe I was thinking of Goose Green?

I knew the runway was a bit restricted in what it could handle.

Never been. I'm more of a helicopter (and tank!) person.

Did some of those jets had asbestos gloves stowed away (side of the plane?) for emergencies?

I think there was an axe logo on Canberras too - unless my memory of that is going too.

There was a DH Mosquito undergoing restoration when I was there a couple of years ago.
