Just surfing around the web and came across this story. At least it's only metal and money that has been lost but its still sad.

OT - Article linked from that in the OP has a terrific typo:

" the first loss of an American life as part of Operation Allied Resolve, the ambiguous campaign against ISIS "

What sort of fking moron attempts to lift a damaged, half-full-of-water plane with a single strap around the wing root?

The Catalina was designed to be hauled out of the water using a single cable attached to the wing;

I'm assuming the salvage crew hoisted it slowly to allow the water to drain, but it's a 70 year old airframe that spent several days with its nose beached and the tail floating in waves, there's all sorts of structural damage that tidal forces could have inflicted before the salvage crew started lifting.

Damn shame thought. One of my Dad's best friends flew RAF Catalinas from Lough Erne in Northern Ireland on submarine patrols during the war and I've heard some fantastic stories about what they got up to.
