Now living by the water I fancied a cheap speedboat, but SWMBO doesnt frown
Im not sure if something like this
http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/Speed-Boats-for...
would cope with the Clyde though

yes Some of the shocking attempts at mooring on a relatively benign river each week would suggest people fail to pick it up in a couple of hours. There are some boats we see struggling each and every week, to the point other boat owners look really nervous when they come into view.

I bought a boat a few years back - never again.

The main reason being that for every hour spent on the water you will spend two hours before and after getting ready and cleaning up, storing stuff away.

Hire. Turn up. Take it out. Bring it back. Go to the pub.

You must be fairly close to me then. If you ever fancy a wee run out on a boat to see if you like it just give me a shout and i'd be happy to take you out for an hour or so if i'm already up there. My boats based at loch lomond.

Part of the issue is that it requires a certain coordination and predictive ability, and also that every time you moor it's different due to wind and current. I think of it as a very slow aeroplane in two dimensions; no two landings are quite the same. I'm always amused by newbie passengers who stand at the side of the cockpit waiting for me to switch the engine off (like a car) before getting off!

ThaTs awfully kind of you Steve, but I wouldnt dream of inconveniencing you, especially as I doubt I will be getting a boat, due partly to the initial cost, but mostly due to SWMBO disapproving of me spending any money on fun smile

PS Were you in that huge convoy of Audis I passed by at Faslane this morning? Hundreds of the things!

No no no, that's all far too negative... and people love showing off their boats! Get wifey onto R8Steve's boat for a trip - it might transform things...

Last year I took a friend out on my boat on the humble River Ouse. Beforehand he wasn't pro-boat at all; by the time we got back he was determined to buy one just like mine and keep it at the same marina!

My SiL is Dutch and little nephew should be a water baby living in Hampshire!

Nope, fraidycat Dad through and through.

Daddy is scared of any watery splash, his 2 brothers and Uncle and Aunt being big Yacht Captiains, and have never done anything else.

Horses for course I guess.

I'm sure that kind of thing does go on up at Loch Lomond but I doubt my OH would approve of that so no worries there smile

In all seriousness though, it's no inconvenience at all and I’d be more than happy to. I’ve lost count of the amount of people I’ve just met I’ve taken out on the boat, it does seem to happen quite a lot up there as they’re all quite a friendly bunch.

A story in similar circumstances was a few years ago there was a couple I got speaking to in the bar at Cameron House hotel. Turned out they were getting married the next day along at Luss so I ended up taking them along on the boat which they absolutely loved, they invited me to the wedding reception to say thanks and everyone had an amazing day/night. They had never been on a boat before...they now have a Sealine S24 berthed 5 up from mine. biggrin

Well, despite some of the advice you guys gave to not buy one.... I've still gone and bought one!

Bought a 21ft 2 berth motor boat, moored in a decent place that we intend on keeping it at which is 40 minutes away. Based near Leeds so access to plenty of locations around there. Comes with BSS until April 2018. Had a recent refurb inside, although we'll probably do a little more to bring it up to scratch for what we need. Its in great condition though, had recent defouling etc and new transom. 15bhp Honda engine.

Me and my dad have gone halves and are giving boating a go for a year, although it will depend on how it goes in that time as to whether we keep or sell. Who knows!

Sounds like a good first boat, well done on taking the plunge smile (what is it?)

By spring next year you will decide it's too small and buy a bigger one...

Its a 21ft Buckingham from the mid 80's. Yeah I'd wondered if I would want something bigger after a while. But hopefully it'll do for now!

It certainly will - there's a surprising amount to learn; quite different from a car.

I can find a 20' http://www.jonesboatyard.co.uk/boat-sales/buckingh... - is that it?
