Official answer on Loch Lomond to the Clyde is a negative.

Asking about has revealed only 2 people are known (in the yard) too have done it, one in a dinghy and one in a canoe.

Its mostly sandbanks as the google earth pictures reveals.

Back to La Diva.

A couple of pics just taken. I would assume that Port Gallice would like it gone to get income from the berth, unless they are still getting one.

I don't agree with this. Cost-effective sailing really is possible.

We have an old 17 foot sailing boat on Loch Lomond that I paid the princely sum of £1200 a few years ago. A bit of power washing and some varnishing restored her lustre and she is absolutely fine for pottering about and the odd bit of club racing.

In terms of annual costs, including insurance, mooring fees and winter storage, I don't pay more than £600. Sure, we've spent another few quid here and there buying luxuries here and there but at that end of the market, it's £50 here and £100 there.

Really owes me next to nothing and in terms of enjoyment for cost, is about the best value thing I have ever bought.

Of course, it's not a super yacht but my point is if you want to sail, it really needn't be pricey.
Howdy neighbour, I'm in Sandpoint Marina in Dumbarton.

Yes it is possible and in the marina theres a few stuck here in the yard living in their boats long term due to costs.

As you say if your happy with a small sail boat then it can be affordable but a 50 foot motor sail boat costs add up quick.
Hello!

You'll know the answer to my long held question then - is it possible to sail out of Loch Lomond and down past you to the Clyde?

I'm not even sure it's accessible and even if it was, I feel like you would probably have to drop a mast or something but wondering how feasible this is for a jaunt??

Agreed, it doesn't take much for the costs to ramp up significantly but we're thinking about moving up to a GK24 or something capable of a bit more lengthy cruising in the near future and I don't anticipate the costs to rise too much more I don't think. Of course, anything without sails will cost you a fortune in fuel and anything 50 foot sized is a different proposition entirely!
Another loch lomond boater here! byebye

Was anything stuck on it? At Gosport Marina back in April there was an apparently abandoned racing yacht with a bunch of "git away or we'll dispose of it" notices stuck to it. Plenty of healthy plantlife growing from it's undersides frown

No signs at all. The.....um....gangland is e tended and as far as I can see nothing to stop one exploring.

The fly bridge still has the branded chairs up there. It's a bit Mary Celeste or Walking Dead if I'm honest.

Perhaps the owners/agents are still paying fees on it. That boat in Gosport was clearly in arrears of marina charges. Not that I was reading anything I shouldn't nono

Slightly on the topic of unused boats and dodgy ownership..

I recall when we were on a family holiday in Corfu, Greece is around 2005, while out for dinner one evening we spotted a large yacht (very rough guess, it must've been 50m+) just off the shore, not moored as such.

I remember we asked the restaurant owner, who was chatting to us, what the deal was and he was telling us it belonged to someone, I can't remember exactly what he said whether it was some wealthy mogul or similar, but it had been seized by the authorities due to links with crimes and the owner had been nicked.

I presume these would just get auctioned off as 'proceeds of crime' depending on the laws of the country that seized it?

Or if you are in an iconic 80's detective show, it gets repurposed and given to you to facilitate you and your partner Tubbs' cover story.

There's an old yacht in the Garrucha Marina (Spain) that is apparently owned by the estates of Richard / Elizabeth Taylor - still in the water and looking very sorry for itself.
the story is, that no one knows which estate own's it, that they continue to pay the fee's and it sits their rotting.

I no nothing about these things, but it looks sad. Has a weird sort of aircraft design to it as well. am desperately going through the holiday snaps to find the pics !

Keen for that anytime! Funnily enough I still have a magnetic key for the marina at Cam House. A mate used to have his boat there and moved it and never bothered about handing the keys back - I really ought to return it next time I'm passing but it lives in a drawer and is eternally forgotten about...

They are regularly recoded so it probably won't work any more if your mate has left.

I'm up most weekends in the good weather (what we get of it anyway) so just give me a shout if you're going down any time.

Shall do. We've had a hopeless season this year, with one thing and another (got a wedding coming up!) and managed a grand total of one day on the water (plus the Scottish Series, which was cool) so hoping to squeeze a few more in before the season ends...

When I lived in Juan Les Pins there were always the boats which had owners in jail but the mooring fees were still paid, one yacht had a full crew on for years and hadn't seen the owner for one reason or another. There was also the superyacht owned by a Russian who'd had a contract out on him so he didn't go there either - strangely he had a 'heart attack' a few years ago.

Always a few at every marina that are neglected. We had to bail one out in Cardiff at a few times. Tiny boat with a huge outboard it didn't take much water to start sinking.

Spain has loads of older neglected boats due to the Spanish governments boat taxes and increases in moring fees. Owners with boats or lower value just left them in the moorings.

I nearly bought one over here a a couple of years back, moorings were not paid and owner refused to reply to any letters. They pulled it up on a dock and put a notice on it. I enquired what they would do with it after the notice run out and it was to be sold off to anyone who wanted it they just wanted unpaid mooring fees covered. 48hours before the noticed had lapsed a low loader turned up and took it weeping I looked at that boat every day for weeks whilst working on my brothers boat that was also on the dock.

First post, here goes...

That would be Brave Challenger (I hope!) I'm told it is now moored somewhere on Southampton Water with some decent sized mussels present on the hull...its time at Gunwharf and Gosport was indeed marred by mooring disputes and it hasn't run properly for years.

A real shame as the Vosper built craft has a fascinating history and deserves better, the current owner has amassed a collection of spare RR Proteus gas turbines (taken from the SRN4 hovercraft at Lee on Solent & other historic craft) but still BC continues to lead a nomadic existence on the South coast as moorings/finances allow.

A brief history can be seen on the link below:

Racing yacht at Gosport was a different boat, sailing one, Solent is littered with out of date race yachts.

We had a big discussion about Brave Challenger a while back on here, still in the same place, Itchen Marine, looking very poorly.

When I filled up our Sea Work demo boat in June 2015 the guy on the pump said it was just being used as a weekend retreat with no plans for restoration. I suspect this would require very deep pockets!
