Am I right in thinking they don't need any extra internal tanks to carry the fuel required for tanking? In which case is it "just" the pumps/controls and refuelling units that have to go on to convert the chartered one back to tanking?

I think so, however others are better informed than me so might confirm that.

There's numerous other pieces of kit required to bring it to def Stan, but nothing significant that your RAF techie struggles to do as it's all designed to be accepted.

Correct, it's a 5000+ mile jet, hardly needs the fuel for itself if it's running circuits just off base. It can take additional but no one's really invested the time or money to do so.
