I'm thinking of going this year to do a recce for my future boating plans. Any tips on the best time to go and what gets busy when? I've been to the excel one before but that's all indoors so I'm not sure what to expect.

It never really gets rammed, but it's certainly busier than the London Show.

Friday 10th is opening day so there will be boat launches and press events which mean some stand closures (Sunseeker always make a big fuss) and restrictions in the morning. Saturdays, especially the second Saturday (19th this year) are traditionally the busiest and with the Red Arrows performing on the 12th numbers will be slightly boosted I guess.

Midweek is always the best time as far as I'm concerned. Fewer day trippers and the dealers/traders will have more time to dedicate to you. The only downside is that there's always tons of school kids but they don't seem to be allowed on to the pontoons.

I'll be going on the final Sat/Sun due to work commitments.

A few years ago a chap approached me near the entrance, asked if I was going so I assumed he was trying to tour tickets, turns out he had recently purchased a Range Rover and had been given some princess VIP passes for the week. And gave me and the Mrs at the time them to use smile free booze for a week smile

Mrs S and I are going and we're taking full waterproofs and thermals seeing as summer has passed you by in the UK.

The Southampton Boat Show is way better than Excel in my view, a lot more boats, particularly saily ones, and you can look at most of them in their element (on the water with their masts and rigging up) so you get a much better feel for them.

Mrs TeeRev and I go nearly every year and it's a good day out. This year we're combining it with a wander around the shopping centre on Sunday, a night at the Grand Harbour, a nice meal at a restaurant yet to be decided and Monday at the show which is the quietest day of the week so really easy to see everything you want.

Next year if everything goes well with my retirement development project I'm hoping to be in a position to place an order at the show but there is still one small snag to overcome before I can do that.

Although my wife likes sailing she has still to be fully convinced that we need a boat, she says we can have an awful lot of holidays for what I'm talking about spending on a hole in the water, I know she's right really but I'm still going to try.

That's what it known as 'a result'! smile

I'll be going mid week but it's been pretty busy every day I've ever been.

He certainly was. Cost him nothing but gave you and your lady a very special day out.

Thanks people - looks like I'll try and get down in the week, work pending, but otherwise I'm not worried about the weekend being heaving. (Ooh is that a sailing based pun?) I'm just looking to have a poke around a few boats otherwise I've got no idea what a realistic budget is!

Think I'll be going down on the 12th.

Bizarrely always get an invite from Oyster to see whatever's on their stand, I feel slightly guilty taking it up as I don't think I'll be buying one any time soon.

My plan is to hopefully get a good deal on a spinlock javket and harness, get a cruising guide and some charts and speak to the charter companies about my trip in the new year round Croatia to find suitable stops.

No buying a yacht I'm afraid frown although I may look at the dinghies on offer.

Should be interesting to see what's launching this year.

I know for a fact that princess are taking 2 new boats. The S65 and the V58 open.

Any other launches people know about?

I'll be there for a couple of days in between Cannes Boatshow, Genoa Boatshow and then Annapolis Boatshow... I'm going to be Boatshow'd out by the end of that little lot. I might even get to see my wife and kid. Lol.

Anyone going to Cannes or Genoa (or even Annapolis for that matter)?

Fairline have their new Targa 53GT there, took this picture on Monday just after it arrived. Not 100% new as it's using a slightly stretched T50 hull.

Sunseeker have nothing new this year.

The T53 is an update of the 50. The hull isn't stretched as such, the extra 3' comes from the addition of a hi-lo bathing platform.

The original T50 was my project when I worked there.

If you are stopping-by the MRL stand, best give Edward a call first, it's starting to look really busy. Make a time to meet as he already has a long list of clients. The new 9m Stingher should be in the water by then.
