According to an article I was reading earlier, there is going to be a second Sunday Times Golden Globe round the world yacht race held in 2018 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original, won famously by Robin Knox-Johnston.

Another of the entries in the original event was this guy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Crowhurst

I have read the book about him by Tomalin and Hall and am fascinated by his story, and have been wondering...how feasible would it be to build a copy of Teignmouth Electron, but done properly and with all of Crowhurst's envisaged electronic gadgets in place, and prepared over a longer timescale, and for someone compete in the race in it to honour his memory?

I would love to do it but know nothing about sailing and doubt I could learn it all in time for the race - what are everyone's thoughts?

I remember reading about this in a yachty mag years ago.
Very sad tale of a chap well out of his depth and once he was embroiled in the lie, there really was no way out.

...which I saw coming the opposite way down the M3 one day, which gave me a bit of a shock.

Until somebody on here pointed out it was a replica.

Incredibly sad story. Summed up by the famous quote from the legend Sir Robin "None of us must judge him too harshly".

Restoring the original is out, it's too far gone now.

Even worse than that now, apparently. It seems a local was bulldozing a nearby bit of beach and ran over it, so there's almost nothing left.

Oh excellent! First I'd heard about a film being made - if I watch it I bet it'll make me want to learn to sail and try and enter the race...

Then fake your logs and disappear.

However if you haven't tried your hand at sailing I would highly recommend getting out on the water.

I did just that this year.
Inspired by the other bloke that buggered off to tahiti instead of finishing the race.

Bernard Moitessier

Wonderful interview with his wife (at the time) in Deep Water, if you see it, it'll give you a good idea why returning home to France didn't seem all that ticketyboo.
