Do they maybe need the smoke deflectors as a 'due diligence' safety thing? Obviously drifting smoke/steam was enough of an issue for them to be fitted in the first place.

I think they make it look a bit "DR Class 52", which isn't cool at all.

I doubt it - there are plenty of locomotives doing the rounds without them - so there is clearly no obligation to retrofit

As long as most people's Hornbys models are LNER Apple green then that's really what it should be...

There comes a point where perfect technical accuracy can be sacrificed for modern practicality. I would guess as a train, it's going to be much more popular and make the NRM more money in that livery.

Plus, more importantly, I prefer it that way

I can't think of one currently in mainline operation that has had them fitted, then removed again.

I'm sure you're right though.

I agree the deflectors spoil the look, but according to this article:

http://locomotive.wikia.com/wiki/Smoke_Deflectors

There is a good reason for them being there.

A couple of snaps from this morning. They let me stand on the footplate briefly. I regressed to being five years old biggrin

My family and i rode on the Scotsman on Saturday.

What an occasion with lots of people on the platforms, in fields, at level crossings, anywhere where they could get a view/photo of the engine as it passed by.

Now the Scotsman has gone all secret, Anybody got an idea of times or how to find out ?
Was hoping to take my grandson to see it at Doncaster on Saturday.
Feels like the vulcan all over again.

No, I just had a look on uksteam.info and that just says "Times withheld due to trespass risk".

That's what I've always used. It's a bit annoying that we can't see it due to a few idiots, but a guess that's always the way.
I would have thought that if more people knew where and when it was, then they could plan a safe point to see it from, rather than last minute panic to get somewhere quickly.
Will keep looking on line for any possible times.
Thanks Andy.

To me it's frustrating that there are so many steam-hauled specials around that the people who are causing this kind of issue have no need, they could just spread themselves out over the many locos that are around. I believe that many of them wouldn't realise if you swapped Scotsman for the Royal Scot, other than the colour, so it wouldn't make it any less enjoyable for them to go and see one of the others.

They should form the S.F.S.S.T.S
Secret Flying Scotsman Society Time Schedule

That way the S.F.S.S.T.S can send those silly bds trespassing on the track on a wild goose chase.

It goes past (well I can 'just' see the railway from my front window) my house on Sunday at some point but I'm booked in at a car show so I'd hoped to see it as it travels up the EC line on Saturday. Don't fancy sitting beside the railway all day either! Is there a tracker you can use like the plane/boat ones?
